A la memoria del General Francisco Vicente Aguilera.El primer patriota, quien nos enseñó el camino de la justicia y de la gloria.[...perdió Cuba el primero de sus hijos y nosotros al gran patriota que nos enseñó lo que debíamos hacer para libertar la patria, y que nos mostraba con su ejemplo, como deben abandonarse las dulzuras de la familia y las comodidades de la vida, para dedicarse, como él lo hizo, en cuerpo y alma a la independencia de su país y a la libertad de cuatrocientos mil esclavos.Antes de adentrarme en esta experiencia histórica tuve que visitar Bayamo, tenía una deuda pendiente con esa ciudad heróica, quería visitar la tierra de mis ancestros, allí estuve un Diez de Octubre. Bayamo era una de las ciudades más bellas de Cuba, con una vida comercial y cultural impresionante, sus orgullosos habitantes de fina educación, amaban tanto el arte como a su ciudad esplendorosa; sus hacendados, gente educada en La Habana y en el extranjero, disfrutaban de una vida holgada, lujos y comodidades sin igual. San Salvador de Bayamo, la segunda Villa fundada en Cuba, se diferenciaba de las demás porque no fue un territorio escogido por los colonizadores de entonces, Bayamo existía ya muchos años antes de la llegada de estos, era una villa indígena llamada Bayamo que es un nombre de origen Siboney.El Diez de Octubre en silencio, hice mi tributo a la fecha gloriosa y a los grandes próceres bayameses de la gesta, Céspedes, Aguilera, Perucho, Maceo Osorio y otros. Visité las dos casas de Céspedes, la natal y la casa de las columnas y la de Estrada Palma. Entré en la mansión donde nació y vivió Aguilera, que hoy es la biblioteca 1868, a la entrada hay un busto impresionante en madera. Caminé por la plaza, la misma que los patriotas cambiaron el nombre de Isabel II por Plaza de la Revolución, puede que sea esta la única plaza central de una ciudad de oriente que no se llame "parque Céspedes". Me trasladé en el tiempo, me imaginé esos gallardos caballeros bayameses paseando por la sombra que otrora tenía esa plaza, acompañados al brazo de sus bellas bayamesas y me imaginé a Aguilera, caminando, erguido, caballeroso, de andar elegante y educado, como dijera Martí sobre él, "andando a paso de hacienda", conversando con todos a su paso. Disfruté de un café en jícara en una esquina de la plaza, me detuve en el local de la Filarmónica, paseé por el bello Boulevard con expresión cultural y artística por todos lados, visité el recinto donde se expone la maqueta de la Ciudad y me personé en la oficina del historiador, quien me recibió cortésmente y con quien mantuve una charla amena y cordial. El historiador me obsequió el libro "Bayamo" de José Maceo Verdecia, una edición anotada del propio historiador. Me habló del ingenio Jucaibama, y fui allí, otra vez me transporté en el tiempo, vislumbrando las faenas típicas de un ingenio, no solo de los esclavos, sino también de los maquinistas y otros oficios de la manufactura del azúcar que eran asalariados. Tuve la oportunidad antes de escribir esta tesis, de conocer Bayamo y de sentir la presencia de Aguilera, como si me hablara, como diciendo, "...dejemos que la historia imparcial emita el juicio final y que los Bayameses de hoy se sientan orgullosos de sus patriotas y de lo que fueron capaces de hacer...". Y aquí estoy ahora, escribiendo una parte de su historia.
