Todo hombre se encuentra enmarcado en una cultura, desde este punto parte Freud en el porvenir de una ilusión. Se nos plantea la idea de que la cultura humana; por un lado, comprende el saber y el poder de los hombre para dominar las fuerzas naturales y; por el otro, comprende todas las organizaciones necesarias para regular las relaciones entre los hombres y para la distribución de los bienes alcanzables. Es así que se llega al punto de aseverar que para que las instituciones culturales se mantengan se necesita cierta coerción. Los medios de coerción que se utilizarían para mantener la cultura son tanto internos como externos. De este modo, en la evolución del hombre existe una transformación paulatina de la coerción externa en coerción interna por la acción de una especial instancia psíquica del hombre que va cogiendo la dominación externa entre sus mandamientos; en conclusión, esto hace de él un ser moral y social. Sin embargo, existe una hostilidad contra la civilización, engendrada por la presión que la misma ejerce sobre el individuo, imponiéndole la renuncia a los instintos. No obstante, uno de los aspectos más importante para mantener el inventario psíquico de una civilización son sus ilusiones o; en otras palabras, sus representaciones religiosas. Freud nos dice que las representaciones religiosas nacen; en primer lugar de la necesidad de defenderse contra la prepotencia de la naturaleza. En segundo lugar, del impulso de corregir las imperfecciones de la civilización. En consecuencia, la civilización en un intento de calmar su ansiedad, en un comienzo humaniza la naturaleza; con esto el hombre llega a encontrar un alivio inmediato y a dominar la situación. Luego de esto, el hombre reviste a las fuerzas naturales de un carácter paternal; es decir, la naturaleza es vista como dios-madre y dios-padre, la civilización al igual que el infante, se da cuenta de que si necesita amor y protección; y tiene que recurrir a la madre y al padre respectivamente. Con ellos se muestra que la civilización tiene el mismo proceso de maduración que un niño. De esta manera, la motivación psicoanalítica de la génesis de la religión constituye la aportación infantil a su motivación manifiesta. Después de esta etapa, el hombre aún con su descubrimiento de que sigue siendo indefenso, paso a crear la existencia de un padre inmortal mucho más poderoso. Es así, que nace un gobierno bondadoso, que mitiga el miedo a los peligros de la vida, da una institución moral universal asegurando la justicia y la prolongación de la existencia terrenal por una vida futura. como consecuencia Freud define a la significación psicológica de las representaciones religiosas como los principios y afirmaciones sobre hechos y relaciones de la realidad exterior en los que se sostiene algo que no hemos hallado por nosotros mismos y que aspiran a ser aceptados como ciertos, pero estos no están fundamentados. De este modo, Freud asevera que la génesis psíquica de las ideas religiosas que son representadas como dogmas son ilusiones; es decir, realizaciones de los deseos más antiguos, intensos y apremiantes de la Humanidad.
