El nombre completo de la novela es tan breve como descriptivo: Le peintre de Salzbourg, journal des emotions d'un coeur souffrant, suivi des Meditations du cloitre. Algo asi como: El pintor de Salzburgo, diario de las emociones de un corazon sufriente, seguido de meditaciones en el monasterio. (Para eludir la ira filologica de Gabriela, nuestra especialista en frances y narcoticos, la desligamos de esta traduccion intuitiva del titulo de la obra) Volviendo a la novela de Charles Nodier, se nota claramente un paralelo con El joven Werther, de Goethe, o al menos, una similitud en los rasgos del protagonista, llamado Charles. Sus busquedas e inquietudes son notablemente opuestas, sin embargo el estilo y el tono de ambos personajes tienen muchos puntos en comun. El Charles de El pintor de Salzburgo, inicia una jornada propia del romanticismo. No hay esperanza ni ilusiones para su drama, sino una busqueda de tranquilidad, de un sitio en el mundo donde reposar las penas. En este caso, un monasterio."
About the Author: Jean-Charles Emmanuel Nodier (Besançon, 29 de abril de 1780 - París, 27 de enero de 1844), fue escritor y bibliotecario francés. Su padre, en el estallido de la Revolución francesa, fue alcalde de Besançon y comisario policial. Al parecer fue un instrumento político en manos de los tiranos jacobinos sin compartir sus principios. Pero su hijo Charles llegó a ser miembro de los Montagnards cuando tenía 20 años. Estudió bajo la dirección de Euloge Schneider, notorio jacobino gobernador de Alsacia, interesándose por la historia natural y aprendiendo alemán e inglés. En 1791 pronunció un discurso a favor de la revolución llamado Sociedad de los Amigos de la Constitución. A partir de 1796 estudió en la escuela central de Besançon, donde participa en la creación de una sociedad secreta denominada Filadelfia y nombrado bibliotecario de la escuela de Doubs un año más tarde. Un artículo crítico con los jacobinos le hace perder el puesto en 1800. En 1802 es encarcelado por publicar un panfleto de nombre La Napoléone, en donde critica a Napoleón. Sale al año siguiente y marcha hacia París en donde tiene una vida agitada y de nuevo va a Besançon. En 1808 realiza un curso de literatura en Dole y se desposa con Desiree Charve. Su carrera literaria entre tanto prosigue con la publicación de un Diccionario de la onomatopeya francesa. En 1809 es asistente literario de sir Herbert Croft e Lady Mary Hamilton en Amiens. En 1813 se encuentra en Liubliana, provincia dálmata del imperio francés, en donde trabaja como bibliotecario municipal, secretario de Joseph Fouché, redator del Télégraphe officiel, periódico oficial de la provincia de Iliria. En al actualidad, el instituto cultural francés de Liubliana lleva el nombre del escritor. Vuelve a París en 1814 en donde se hace redactor del Journal des Débats. Al año siguiente publica Jean Sbogar, la historia de un bandido en la provincia de Iliria. En 1819 colabora para el Le drapeau Blanc. En 1821 hace un viaje a Escocia, en donde le impresiona sus paisaje reflejándolo en Promenade de Dieppe aux montagnes d'Écosse. Introdujo el romanticismo en Francia, influyendo después poderosamente en los surrealistas. Su juventud fue tormentosa. Bajo El Terror, fue prisionero político. Luego vivió el exilio, en 1803, por satirizar a Napoleón. Fue filósofo, entomólogo, bibliófilo y bibliotecario de enorme prestigio en su época, dirigiendo la Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal (1824).
