Don antonio DE saavedra guzman fué natural de Mexi co, irijo de uno de los primeros pobladores y biznieto del pri 'mer conde de Castelar, D. Juan Arias de Saavedra. Se igno ra el año de su nacimiento. Casó con una nieta de Jorge de Alvarado, hermano del célebre D. Pedro. Dedicóse al estu dio de las bellas letras; de la retórica y poética en especial, y añadió el conocimiento de la lengua mexicana, que supo con perfeccion. Era entónces frecuente que los criollos su... pieran la lengua de los indios, ménos despreciada másnecesaria que ahora, y Guzman no es el único ejemplo 'de ello. Solián tambien pasar á España, fuera por deseó de co no cer la patria de origen, 6 para solicitar mercedes que juz gaban debidas al los Servicios de sus padres, en lo cual no andaban, á la verdad, remisos, y esas continuas pretensiones daban no poco que hacer a los vireyes, y ¿¡un al rey mismo, porqué con aptitud 6 sin ella, no habia hijo 6 nieto de con quistador que no se creyera con derecho ocupar un empleo ó a disfrutar una encomienda, teniendo por indigno de su no ble alcurnia (y Saavedra se preciaba mucho de la suya) cual quier otro género de vida más útil al Estado.

No añrmaré que con ese fin fuera Saavedra a España, aunque me lo hacen sospechar las quejas en que prorumpe al comenzar el canto XV; pero lo cierto es que fué, y que en los setenta dias de la navegacion compuso su Peregrina Indiana, con los materiales que habia acopiado en siete años. Llegado a'. Madrid, imprimió allí su obra en 1599; y prueba de que estaba bien relacionado en la corte, es haber logrado elogios 'de muchos poetas para encabezar con ellos el libro. No fué su ánimo, segun dice, formar una epopeya, sino una historia fiel de lo ocurrido desde que'cortés salió de _cuba hasta que ganó la ciudad de México. Este es el asurito de los veinte cantos en octavas reales de que consta el poema, intercalados algunos episodios que sin duda le parecieron necesarios para amenizar la narracion. A decir lo que pienso, no veo la necesidad de gastar siete años en ac0piar materia les para escribirle, mejor habria sido alargar los setenta dias empleados en la composicion, y pasarle un algo más la lima.
