Ahora, en la madurez de mi vida, he intentado otra vez rehacer la historia moderna de Liliput, pero como puede realizarlo la fantasia de un hombre, menos optimista y generosa que la de un nino. Esto de imaginarse una humanidad mas pequena que la nuestra, con nuestros mismos defectos y preocupaciones, como si fuese contemplada a traves de un microscopio, es algo que halaga la vanidad de los hombres, y por lo mismo resulta tan antiguo como su existencia. Swift, el humoristico dean irlandes, fue el creador de Gulliver y del reino de Liliput; pero cien anos antes, Rabelais, que indudablemente le sirvio de modelo, habia descrito con no menor humor las costumbres de enanos y gigantes. Tengo la certeza de que en todas las literaturas antiguas fueron muchos los relatos sobre paises de pigmeos y paises de colosos. zQue pueblo no conto historias de gnomos minusculos, de vida misteriosa, y gigantes que para contemplar a uno de nuestra especie necesitan colocarlo sobre la palma de una mano?... Voltaire se inspiro en Swift para crear su Micromegas, y seria muy largo el relato de todos los novelistas y cuentistas que imitaron mas o menos directamente este genero de fantasias. Yo escribi la presente novela creyendo que unicamente iba a servir para la produccion de una cinta cinematografica, y jamas apareceria en forma de libro. En realidad, la casa editorial de Nueva York no me pidio una novela, sino lo que llaman en lenguaje cinematografico un escenario, un relato escueto y de pura accion, para que sirva de guia al director de escena, a los encargados de las tramoyas y a los actores que interpretan los personajes. Pero excitado por la novedad del trabajo y a impulsos tambien de mis habitos de novelista, empece a escribir y a escribir, sin darme cuenta de que en vez de un escenario producia una novela, y en veintiuna tardes termine EL PARAISO DE LAS MUJERES. Nunca he trabajado tan aprisa y con tanto fervor. Creo que si me pusiera ahora a hacer una copia del presente libro emplearia mas tiempo. Repito que jamas pense que mi novela cinematografica pudiera convertirse en volumen impreso; y mi sorpresa fue grande al ver que el escenario era un libro al que algunos pretendian encontrar cierta intencion filosofica y politica. Hasta en los Estados Unidos - pais donde las mujeres ejercen una enorme y legitima influencia - creen algunos, equivocadamente, que mi novela es a modo de una satira del feminismo norteamericano. Como EL PARAISO DE LAS MUJERES ha sido traducida ya a varios idiomas, me decido a publicarla igualmente en espanol, aunque no pensase en ello cuando la escribi. Sera una obra mas dentro del marco de la novela espanola, la cual desde hace algunos anos no peca ciertamente por exceso de variedad. Los mas de los novelistas marchan en fila india, uno tras otro, y solo de tarde en tarde se les ocurre saltar un poco fuera del sendero. Mientras tanto, en los otros paises la novela procura renovarse y los autores cambian con frecuencia su manera de ver la vida y de expresar sus impresiones, para que no los encasille el publico, adivinando de antemano lo que pueden decir. Ademas, la novela es un genero de variedad infinita, y alli donde todos los novelistas describen lo mismo, con un lenguaje semejante, la novela corre peligro de muerte. Tal vez el presente libro sea considerado por muchos como una equivocacion al compararlo con mis anteriores obras; pero yo prefiero equivocarme yendo en busca de novedad, a conseguir aciertos faciles, que muchas veces no son mas que simples repeticiones de triunfos anteriores. De todos modos, me anima la esperanza de que este relato ligero tal vez resulte mas entretenido para el lector que muchas novelas de moda reciente, en las que se emplean trescientas paginas solo para preparar el encuentro a puerta cerrada de dos personas de distinto sexo,
