Anais Nin fue una mujer que no aceptó ninguna regla convencional en su búsqueda del amor, del placer sexual y el frenesí de la existencia, con múltiples amantes que completaban su agenda a tiempo completo. Casada con su marido Hugh Guiler, mantuvo relaciones sexuales con infinidad de personas, entre ellas con su primo Eduardo Sanchez, el escritor Henry Miller, su muer June Mansfield, sus dos analistas Dr. René Allendy y Otto Rank, Antonín Artaud, y finalmente con su propio padre Joaquín Nin. En la última etapa de su vida mantuvo simultáneamente dos matrimonios legales, uno en la costa este de EE.UU con Hugh Guiler, y en la costa oeste con Rupert Pole Hija de Rosa Culmell, y el compositor y pianista cubano Joaquín Nin, fue abandonada por su padre cuando Anaïs contaba con once años. Este abandono la marcó durante toda su vida y fue el detonante para que comenzara a escribir sus diarios, que se iniciaron como una carta dirigida a su padre, con quien no tuvo contacto durante los siguientes 20 años.Ha expresado sus experiencias en un diario cuyos manuscritos constan de 35 000 páginas. Existen en la actualidad dos versiones publicadas de sus diarios debido a que mucha gente que Anaïs incluye en sus diarios estaba viva cuando el primer volumen fue publicado en los 60 y muchos párrafos debieron ser eliminados.
