Así existe una época bacterial que, sin embargo, toca a su fin con el descubrimiento de los antibióticos. A pesar del manifiesto miedo a la pandemia gripal, actualmente no vivimos en una época viral, sino en una época neuronal, con enfermedades más sofisticadas de la mente.
En la lucha contra la pandemia existe una profunda complicidad entre la virtualidad y lo vírico. Según ello el enemigo aparece en la primera fase como un lobo. Es un enemigo externo, que ataca y contra el cual uno se defiende construyendo fortificaciones y murallas. En la siguiente fase, el enemigo adopta la forma de una rata. Es un enemigo que opera en la clandestinidad y se combate por medios higiénicos. Después viene una fase ulterior, la del escarabajo, donde el enemigo adopta por último una forma viral. Esta forma de extenderse la reacción hacia lo que te rodea es vírica, en el sentido de que no opera frontalmente sino por contigüidad, por contagio, por reacción en cadena y, desde el primer momento, atenta contra nuestro sistema inmunológico. El cuarto estadio de las enfermedades lo conforman los virus; se mueven, por decirlo así, en la cuarta dimensión. Es mucho más difícil defenderse de los virus, ya que se hallan en el corazón del sistema.

Se origina un "enemigo fantasma" que se extiende sobre todo el planeta, que se infiltra por todas partes, igual que un virus, y que penetra todos los intersticios del poder. La violencia viral parte de aquellas singularidades que se establecen en el sistema a modo de durmientes células terroristas y tratan de destruirlo.

Biddy es un pescador en las aguas del Canadá en Bella Coola. El profesor Neil de Londres ha puesto la "salud" como el valor absoluto de su vida, lo erige en religión, y es también el valor absoluto para el amor. Fabio, un policía corrupto de Caracas, y Mette, una prostituta de Ámsterdam, viven un tiempo atomizado, un tiempo discontinuo. En contraposición a todo ello aparecen dos personajes irreales en un mundo irreal, Narayan e Indira que se conocen en la India. Ya no focalizan ese amor en un punto, sino que como el incienso, llenan el espacio, y lo llenan con el aroma de cedro y de pino, con el aroma del espacio que calma y libera.
