About the Book

Tracing the history of ETA the Basque nationalist and separatist organization from its creation in 1950s Spain at the height of the Franco dictatorship to the definitive ceasefire it declared in October 2011, this examination analyzes the movement s ability to carve out a solid social base of support that has allowed it to survive for more than 50 years in the face of national and international opposition. The book looks at ETA s communication, marketing, and recruitment strategy, detailing its evolution from a purely militant group to its diversification into the social and political spheres. Special attention is paid to the message the group has traditionally attempted to disseminate, the media apparatus it has used to spread that message, the recruitment campaigns it has carried out to attract new members, and the decision making that informed the resolution to give up the armed struggle. More than simply the story of one particular separatist group, this study is in many ways an exploration of 20th-century Spanish history as a whole.
