Escrita por el historiador frances, Jules Michelet en 1861, aqui se le ofrece la obra literaria, El Mar. Con capitulos que llevan titulos como El Pulso del Mar, Las Tempestades, y El Mar de Leche. Cuando Jules Michelet se disponia a escribir un gran tratado sobre el mar (La Mer, 1861), lo primero que hizo fue usar esa inmensidad y ese tremendo poderio como punto de referencia del ser humano: Si nosotros necesitamos del mar, en cambio el mar no nos necesita para nada. Puede pasar muy bien sin el hombre. A la Naturaleza parece no importarle gran cosa ese testigo: Dios es el unico que se encuentra ahi como en su casa. En este punto imagina que el mar nos dice, burlon y engreido, desde el fondo de su inmutabilidad: Manana tu dejaras de ser, y yo soy eterno. Tus huesos reposaran bajo la tierra, se disolveran en el transcurso de los siglos, y yo existire aun, majestuoso, indiferente, equilibrada la grande vida que me armoniza a la vida de los mundos lejanos.

About the Author

Jules Michelet fue un importante historiador frances, nacio en Paris, en una familia calvinista (hugonotes). Su padre era maestro de imprenta, aunque no muy prospero, y Jules le ayudaba en el trabajo de impresion. Le habian ofrecido un puesto en la imprenta imperial, pero su padre lo envio al celebre colegio de Lycee Charlemagne, donde fue alumno destacado. Aprobo el examen universitario en 1821, y fue rapidamente nombrado profesor de historia en el College Rollin. Se caso poco despues, en 1824. Este fue uno de los periodos mas favorables para los eruditos y los hombres de letras de Francia, y Michelet tenia padrinos poderosos en Abel-Francois Villemain y Victor Cousin, entre otros. Aunque era un politico apasionado (habiendo adoptado desde la infancia el republicanismo y una version especial de librepensador romantico), Michelet era sobre todo un hombre de letras y un investigador de historia. Sus primeras obras fueron textos escolares. Entre 1825 y 1827, produjo diversos esbozos, tablas cronologicas, etc, de la historia moderna. El mismo ano de 1827, fue nombrado maestro de conferencias en la Escuela Normal Superior de Paris. Cuatro anos despues, en 1831, su Introduction a lhistoire universelle muestra un estilo muy distinto, exhibiendo la idiosincrasia y el poder literario del escritor, desplegando tambien las cualidades de visionario especializado que hacen a Michelet mas estimulante, aunque menos digno de confianza como historiador. Expone su vision de la historia como un largo combate de la libertad contra la fatalidad. Los acontecimientos de 1830 lo situaran en una posicion mejor para desarrollar sus estudios, al obtener un puesto en los Archivos Nacionales, asi como un titulo de asistente del profesor Francois Guizot en la facultad de literatura de la Universidad de la Sorbona.
