About the Author: Nace el 11 de noviembre de 1821 en Moscú y muere el 9 de febrero de 1881 en San Petersburgo. Hijo de padre autoritario, avaro y alcohólico y madre amorosa y protectora. Su infancia se vio marcada por la prematura muerte de la madre y luego dos años más tarde la de su padre; consecuencia de la depresión y el alcohol. Entre 1838 y 1843 cursó sus estudios en ingeniería. Después de adquirir el grado militar de subteniente, se incorporó a la Dirección General de Ingenieros en San Petersburgo. En 1844 despertaría su vocación hacia la literatura para más tarde pedir su excedencia del ejército con la idea de dedicarse exclusivamente a ella. En 1845 escribió su primera obra "Pobres Gentes" que lo llevarían a convertirse en una celebridad pero, lamentablemente sus siguientes obras no tuvieron el éxito esperado lo que lo llevó a hundirse en una fuerte depresión. Tiempo después se unió a grupos de jóvenes intelectuales que estudiaban literatura de socialismo francés, prohibida por la política de aquel entonces. Fue arrestado en 1849 y condenado a muerte pero minutos antes de su ejecución fue conmutado y enviado al ejército como soldado raso, lo que sería la segunda parte de su condena. No fue sino hasta 1860 donde logró ser licenciado y recobrar su carrera literaria. Fundó con su hermano la revista "Tiempo", en cuyo primer número apareció su novela "Humillados y ofendidos". Su siguiente obra fue "Recuerdos de la casa de los muertos" publicada en otra revista. En 1864 logró publicar "Memorias del Subsuelo" junto a su hermano pero el fallecimiento de este y de su esposa, junto con las deudas que le había dejado, lo llevaron de vuelta al juego y a la depresión. A partir de 1865 publicó varias obras con gran éxito que lo ayudaron a salir de las deudas, entre ellas están, Crimen y castigo, El jugador, El idiota, El eterno marido, Los demonios, El adolescente y Los hermanos Karamázov. Tomó como centro de sus obras las preocupaciones que lo atormentaban con respecto al futuro de la humanidad, las injusticias sociales, la pobreza, las relaciones amorosas y el egoísmo. El escritor abarca áreas de la psicología, la filosofía y la ética. Algunos pasajes de las novelas de Dostoievski pueden interpretarse como reescrituras encubiertas de su propia vida.
