El grillo del hogar conjuga las principales habilidades de Dickens: por un lado, el humor con el que presenta a sus personajes (la sordera del misterioso viejo, el descuidado bebé cuya cabeza golpea con las paredes) o dialoga burlonamente con el lector; por el otro, la utilización de los recursos básicos de la trama, desde la insólita casualidad hasta el reconocimiento de los personajes (lo que los griegos llamaban anagnórisis). ¿Quién sino él puede presentarnos la triste ironía de una chica ciega cosiendo ojos de cristal en las muñecas de las niñas ricas y hacerlo parecer una broma? Gente pobre pero destinados a la felicidad y poderosos que merecen un castigo: el pomposo Tackleton es un explotador (como el Scrooge de Cuento de Navidad), pero está enchido de orgullo. Allí recibirá su castigo cuando descubra que las apariencias engañan.
About the Author: Charles Dickens, ( 1812 - 1870) es considerado el más famoso de los escritores de la época Victoriana en Inglaterra, así como uno de los indudables clásicos universales de la literatura. De familia humilde, su padre acabó siendo encarcelado por problemas de deudas, lo que llevó a un Dickens todavía niño a buscar trabajo en una fábrica de tintes. Esta fue una experiencia que escribiría más adelante, aunque añadiendo grandes dosis de ficción, en una de sus obras más conocidas: David Copperfield (1850) Los primeros trabajos que le dieron cierto renombre fueron los pequeños relatos firmados bajo en seudónimo de Boz y el los que describía el devenir cotidiano de la ciudad de Londres, todo aliñado con cierta ironía y humor que pronto lo convertiría en una lectura popular. Los apuntes de Boz (1836) fue su primera obra publicada. El estilo de Dickens se adptaba perfectamente al ritmo del serial de la época, con capítulos publicados cada semana en los que intentaba capturar al lector hasta el siguiente número. Es posible que Dickens fuera el inventor del Gancho o Cliffhanger, tan habitual en el lenguaje televisivo moderno. En 1843 publica el que sería su obra más conocida, Cuento de Navidad, una obra infantil que ha sido adaptada en innumerables ocasiones al cine, el teatro y la televisión. Otras obras destacadas en la producción de Dickens serían Grandes esperanzas (1861), Tiempos difíciles (1854) o Historia de dos ciudades (1859) Además de novelas, Dickens trabajó como articulista en varios periódicos y como editor de semanarios, escribió varios libros de viajes, Notas americanas (1842), y mantuvo una compañía de teatro en la que adaptaba sus propias obras.
