About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The authoritative tale of the final months of the Spanish Civil War, written by Paul Preston, the most prestigious Hispanist of our time.

"Negotiated peace always; unconditional surrender so that they shoot half a million Spaniards, never." --Juan Negrín

This is the story of an avoidable tragedy that cost many thousands of lives and ruined tens of thousands more. It has many protagonists, but is centered around three individuals. The first, Dr. Juan Negrín, President of the Second Republic and victim of what could be called a "confederacy of dunces," tries to prevent the tragedy. The other two were responsible for what happened. One, Julián Besteiro, acted with astonishing naivete. The other, Segismundo Casado, acted with a surprising combination of cynicism, arrogance, and egotism.

The result was a humanitarian catastrophe and the worst possible end for the tragedy that was Spain's war.
