Pero ¿hay acaso alguna novela de primer orden que desde cierto punto de vista no sea un poema? Por lo demás, Maeterlinek ha escrito con exactitud: Gómez Carrillo, es ante todo, un gran poeta en prosa. Es que lo que hay de poesía y de gran poesía en esas páginas, no estorba para que la novela misma, en su esencia novelesca, sea interesante y hasta interesantísima. Porque esos personajes singulares que otro hubiera podido convertir en abstracciones o en símbolos, ese Teófilo tan fuerte en su flaqueza resignada y esa Eudosia tan enternecedora en su abandono absoluto, forman una pareja que vive con magnifico relieve en la realidad de la pasión. El universo del amor se ha enriquecido con dos criaturas inmortales -dice, hablando de ellos, el ilustre poeta Manuel Machado- Y yo creo, como él, que esas altas encarnaciones del amor, en lo que este sentimiento tiene de más misterioso, de más irresistible, de más imprevisto, de más profundo, de más religioso, vivirán eternamente junto a las amantes más inolvidables, en el mundo ideal de las figuras novelescas. Y que lección más hermosa la que se desprende de esta obra profundamente cristiana. Desde este punto de vista, la novela de Gómez Carrillo es realmente un poema, un poema soberbio, iluminado por la luz del Oriente, perfumado por las flores sublimes de la leyenda mística, murmurante de preces y de confidencias, tembloroso de deseos, de escrúpulos, embellecido por el milagro de las caricias que embellecen, santificado en el holocausto del evangelista.
