Esta gran historia de espionaje nos permitirá pasear por el Londres del XVIII: por el refinado ambiente de la Royal Society y por tabernas, muelles y tugurios y también por el Madrid dieciochesco donde respiraremos el ambiente cultural de una época en profunda transformación.

España a mediados del siglo XVIII. La Ilustración empieza a ser realidad, pero la Inquisición aún tiene fuerza. Los marinos españoles publican obras de gran importancia científica. Es el caso de Jorge Juan, que ha medido el meridiano terrestre y acaba de publicar un libro sobre ello, pese a los reparos de la Inquisición.

Por su parte, el marqués de la Ensenada, principal ministro de Fernando VI, está dispuesto a potenciar la flota moderna capaz de enfrentarse a la británica. Jorge Juan viaja a Londres como científico para participar en las reuniones de la Royal Society, donde se lo recibe como marino ilustrado, pero la verdadera razón de su viaje es espiar los astilleros ingleses.

Adopta para ello una doble identidad: la real y la de un librero que se mueve por los muelles del Támesis y las tabernas portuarias buscando a expertos en la construcción naval. Así, contratará y traerá a España a los hombres que harán realidad los proyectos de Ensenada. Pero al ser descubierto, tendrá que huir de Londres.

En Madrid, Fernando VI y la portuguesa Bárbara de Braganza están empeñados en mantenerse neutrales ante la guerra que enfrenta a británicos y franceses. Ensenada, en cambio, es partidario de la alianza con Francia ya que Gran Bretaña practica el contrabando en nuestras colonias. La corte, donde se respira un ambiente tan culto -Farinelli es el centro de ese mundo- como mojigato, también es centro de intrigas políticas.

About the Author: José Calvo Poyato (Cabra, Córdoba, 1951) es catedrático de historia. Se doctoró con una tesis sobre los señoríos en el paso del siglo XVII al siglo XVIII, período que, centrado en el reinado del último Austria, Carlos II, y el primero de los Borbones, Felipe V, constituye la mayor parcela de su labor investigadora: La guerra de Sucesión (1988), Así vivían en el Siglo de Oro (1989), De los Austrias a los Borbones (1990), Carlos II el Hechizado y su época (1992), Felipe V, el primer Borbón (1993) y Juan José de Austria (2002).
