About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Seven years after The Great Swindle (Film title: "See You Up There"), which won the Goncourt Prize in 2013 and has sold over two million copies, Pierre Lemaitre now closes his superb trilogy devoted to the interwar period with The Mirror of Our Sorrows, an epic novel about greatness and the despairs of a society crushed by a History whose echoes still resonate today.

Spring 1940. Louise Belmont, thirty, runs naked and covered in blood along Montparnasse Boulevard. To understand the macabre situation she has just experienced, this young teacher will have to plunge into the madness of an unparalleled historical moment: German troops march relentlessly towards Paris and the French army is in full disarray, hundreds of thousands of terrified people flee in search of a safer place. Trapped in this unprecedented exodus, and at the mercy of German bombs, Louise will end up crossing paths with two deserting soldiers from the Maginot Line, a passionate second lieutenant faithful to his moral principles and a dramatic priest capable of standing up to the enemy.

Imaginative and lavish, full of family secrets and unexpected twists, The Mirror of Our Sorrows is an inexhaustible novel about the adventures of great characters who, faced with the heartbreaking effects of war, struggle to keep their most intimate illusions intact.
