Tan ruidosas han sido las aclamaciones por los méritos literarios, que su trasfondo ideológico ha quedado en un plano muy gris y secundario, cuando no en las frías penumbras de la indiferencia o la ignorancia.Sin embargo, las obras maestras de la escena helénica también contienen una denuncia, subliminal o no, de un hecho por demás significativo y que bien pudiera considerarse el parteaguas entre la prehistoria y la historia, un período en que el matriarcado -institución social correspondiente a la etapa primitiva de la humanidad, caracterizada por la primacía de la mujer o madre en la comunidad doméstica y por la filiación matrilineal de los hijos-, se vio constreñido a replegarse entre gemidos dolorosos, o entre espasmos de violencia agónica, pero nunca en medio de un silencio apacible o cómplice o producto de la conformidad resultante de un pacto inteligente y de recíproco provecho.Fue el filósofo alemán Juan Jacobo Bachofen el primero en advertir, tras un estudio minucioso de los textos esquíleos (principalmente La Orestíada), un "cuadro dramático de la lucha entre el derecho materno agonizante y el derecho paterno, que nació y logró la victoria sobre el primero en la época de las epopeyas".Como es del dominio público, llevada de su pasión por su amante Egisto, la reina de Argos, Clitemnestra, asesina a Agamenón, su marido, al regresar éste de la guerra de Troya; pero Orestes, hijo de ambos, venga al padre quitando la vida a su madre.Ello hace que se vea perseguido por las Erinias, seres demoníacos que protegen el derecho materno, según el cual el matricidio es el más grave e imperdonable de los crímenes. Pero Apolo, que por mediación de su oráculo ha incitado a Orestes a matar a su madre, y Atenea, que interviene como juez (ambas divinidades representan aquí el nuevo derecho paterno) defienden a Orestesy acaban por absolverlo, con la connivencia del areópago, un jurado constituido por ancianos varones.De acuerdo con Federico Engels, de esta forma el derecho paterno "obtiene la victoria sobre el materno; 'los dioses de la nueva generación', según se expresan las propias Erinias, se resignan a ocupar un puesto diferente al que han venido ocupando y se ponen al servicio del nuevo orden de cosas".En el estudio introductorio que precede a esta obra, se concluye que un juicio equitativo sería aquel que resolviera la inmediata revisión de los mitos griegos: Así saldrían de las penumbras, verdades peligrosas para las creencias hasta hoy aceptadas a pie juntillas. Sin necesidad de viajar en una máquina del tiempo, ni de mirar a través de un cronoscopio, se visualizará algún día, que ni Penélope era el modelo de las virtudes conyugales que tanto se celebra, ni Helena la casquivana griega que comprometió la idílica paz de la Hélade por su propensión innata al adulterio; ni Clitemnestra la feroz asesina que durante los diez años de ausencia de su cornudo esposo sólo vivió para tramar la muerte de éste; acaso ni Antígona sea la conmovedora paloma enfrentándose a un gavilán de plumas regias; pero tampoco Medea sería la teratológica fémina que sus detractores se han solazado en retratar.Con tal premisa, la perversidad de esta mujer quedaría reducida, también, a un mito (como el carro de fuego tirado por dragones en que se fugó Medea, ingenioso precedente de los taxis espaciales), que la malicia masculina ha trasladado a los planos de la sedicente verdad oficial.Todo esto se traduciría forzosamente, en un mutis de las anquilosadas concepciones del hombre con relación a su ya clásica dominación sobre la mujer, especialmente en nuestra época contemporánea, cuando asoma una definitiva r
