Zane Grey nació en Zanesville, estado de Ohio, el 31 de enero de 1875. El 1 de junio de 1862, en plena Guerra de Secesión, el presidente Lincoln aprobaba el proyecto de un ferrocarril que uniese el Atlántico con el Pacífico. Dos grandes compañías, con subvenciones del gobierno de Washington y sin entrar en territorio sudista, llevarían a cabo la colosal empresa. La Central Pacific partiría de San Francisco (California) y la Union Pacific lo haría desde Omaha (Nebraska), ciudad situada al norte de Saint Joseph. En California abundaban los inmigrantes de origen oriental, y gran número de chinos, la mano de obra más sufrida y más barata, fueron contratados; había que salvar el gran obstáculo de Sierra Nevada y cruzar después las áridas altiplanicies, hasta llegar al Gran Lago Salado. La Union Pacific -que, aparte de las dificultades topográficas, tenía que hacer frente a los ataques de las belicosas tribus indias- empleó a los duros irlandeses. Unos y otros -irlandeses por el Este y chinos por el Oeste- hicieron posible, en muchos casos a costa de perder la vida, el tendido del ferrocarril transcontinental. El 10 de mayo de 1869 se unirían las dos líneas en Ogden, ciudad situada 16 kilómetros al este del Lago Salado.En el capítulo XXXV de la novela El caballo de hierro, Zane Grey hace una breve crónica periodística acerca del trascendental acontecimiento. Promontory Point era el lugar elegido y aquel día de 1869 llegaron trenes especiales del Este y del Oeste. El gobernador de California, que a la vez era presidente de la sección occidental de la línea férrea, recibió al vicepresidente de los Estados Unidos y a los directores del Union Pacific. Los mormones de Utah acudieron en nutrido grupo, así como oficiales y soldados de uniforme. Los trabajadores irlandeses y negros del Este se mezclaban con los chinos y mejicanos del Oeste. Para fijar el raíl que establecería la unión, Nevada había enviado un roblón de plata y una traviesa de laurel; Arizona había regalado otro hecho con una aleación de hierro, plata y oro; y el roblón que se colocaría el último, de oro macizo, era obsequio de California. Cuando remachasen ese último roblón, la tan esperada noticia, recibida en toda América gracias al telégrafo, encontraría eco en el tañido de la campana de la Libertad (Filadelfia) y en los cien cañonazos que se dispararían en Omaha, San Francisco y Nueva York.La conquista del Oeste la llevaron a cabo hombres de toda índole y condición. En aquellas oleadas humanas afloraban todos los sentimientos y pasiones, desde las más sublimes virtudes hasta los vicios más bajos. Una multitud en la que se mezclaban magnánimos exploradores con traficantes mezquinos; honrados y laboriosos colonos con vagos y desaprensivos forajidos; ciudadanos pacíficos con violentos pistoleros; el minero ingenuo con el zorruno tahúr; las pocas doncellas con las muchas prostitutas y los rudos cowboys con los huidizos cuatreros.
