About the Book

It surprised me that the eruption of an Indonesian volcano in 1815 would be one of the contributing causes of the birth in the West of the modern vampire legend, and of the nightmarish living being made of fragments of cadavers. I felt a strange pleasure at seeing how they joined in just one story, which I vaguely sensed: the lives of Byron and Shelley with the catastrophe of a volcanic eruption in the South Seas, with a tsunami on the coast of Bali, with that cloud of sulfur and ash and volcanic crystals that blackened the sky over the Indochinese Peninsula and which the monsoons carried up to the north, unleashing cholera in India and drowning crowds of people in the floods of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. That story united extreme things, encompassed half the world, combined geological and meteorological phenomena with historical facts, literary characters, and fantastical creatures.
