Escrita en parte como respuesta al darwinismo social y, en particular, al ensayo del siglo XIX de Thomas H. Fue publicado por primera vez por William Heinemann en Londres en octubre de 1902. Los distintos capítulos habían sido publicados originalmente entre 1890 y 1896 como una serie de ensayos en la revista literaria mensual británica, The Nineteenth Century.
About the Author: Peter (Piotr) Alekseyevich Kropotkin es un anarco-comunista, geógrafo y científico. Proveniente de la alta nobleza moscovita, se unió al ejército imperial ruso desde 1857. Luego fue asignado como oficial cosaco en Siberia. Desde 1867, dejó el ejército para estudiar matemáticas y geografía en la Universidad de San Petersburgo. Publica varios trabajos en el norte de Asia y explora la península escandinava. Desde 1872, es parte de la Federación Jurásica de la Primera Internacional. Él regresa a San Petersburgo donde lleva a cabo una actividad militante clandestina. Fue encarcelado en 1874 y escapó dos años después. Un refugiado en Gran Bretaña, regresó a Suiza, reanudó su activismo y publicó varios libros políticos. En 1879 fundó el periódico Le Révolté.
