"El Apocalipsis" de San Juan (en griego antiguo, Ἀποκάλυψις Ἰωάννου Apokálypsis Ioánnou 'Revelación de Juan'), también conocido como el libro de las Revelaciones, es el último libro del Nuevo Testamento y de la Biblia cristiana. También es conocido como Revelaciones de Jesucristo por el título que al principio se da a este libro (Ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ) y, en algunos círculos protestantes, simplemente como Revelación o Libro de las revelaciones. Por su género literario, es considerado por la mayoría de los académicos el único libro del Nuevo Testamento de carácter exclusivamente profético. El Apocalipsis quizás sea el escrito más rico en símbolos de toda la Biblia. La cantidad de símbolos, eventos y procesos complica la tarea de interpretar la totalidad del texto y, como tal, ha sido objeto de numerosas investigaciones, interpretaciones y debate a lo largo de la historia. La coincidencia de este nombre con el de Juan el Evangelista y el autor de otros escritos del Nuevo Testamento es en gran parte la razón por la cual se atribuye el libro de manera tradicional al apóstol San Juan (a quien se le atribuyen también el cuarto Evangelio y tres cartas: 1 Juan, 2 Juan y 3 Juan). Sin embargo en el Apocalipsis, el autor solo menciona su nombre, sin identificarse nunca con el mismo apóstol Juan de los Evangelios, o que se trate siquiera del mismo autor de los otros escritos atribuidos al apóstol. La mayoría de los Padres de la Iglesia primitiva, o Padres Apostólicos, como san Papías, san Hipólito, san Ireneo, san Policarpo o san Justino y otros más, afirmaban que el autor de este Libro inspirado era el propio Evangelista, discípulo del Señor; en el año 633 el IV Concilio de Toledo intentando despejar la duda creada recién a partir del último tramo del siglo III, cuando ya no vivía ningún discípulo que hubiese tratado o conocido al autor del Cuarto Evangelio, afirmó que el Apocalipsis era obra del Evangelista y que debía tenerse por obra divina y ciertamente canónica, fulminando la excomunión para quienes lo negasen. De manera tal que la Iglesia Católica considera normalmente al Libro como de la autoría del Apóstol Juan, el mismo llamado Evangelista, que se trata de un libro divinamente inspirado y que forma parte de las Sagradas Escrituras que deben ser creídas con fe católica. De cualquier manera, una corriente dentro de las investigaciones modernas suele agrupar los escritos atribuidos a Juan y algunos llegan a afirmar que pertenecen a una supuesta comunidad denominada "joánica". Esta postura no indicaría necesariamente la autoría directa del apóstol Juan, pero sí que una comunidad ya sea fundada por él o fuertemente influenciada por él, sería la que generaría estos documentos (Hahn, 2001). Así, sostiene que, aunque Juan no hubiera escrito de puño y letra el Apocalipsis, sería como si lo hubiera hecho a través de esta comunidad. Además, piensan que asignar como autor de las obras a un personaje de renombre era común en la tradición de la literatura apocalíptica, no para darle un crédito extra aunque falso a la obra, sino porque de hecho el autor verdadero se identifica plenamente con el personaje que se marca como autor de la obra (Vanni, 1982: 18-19).
