About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The unique story of James Costos, Obama's ambassador to Spain.

Welcome to dance floor diplomacy!

-James, they just called to ask if I wanted to decorate the White House.
-Oh goodness, hang up the phone it must be a joke.
-No, no. I think they're serious.

This is how it begins, a story that took James Costos from a high executive position at HBO to being President Obama's ambassador in Spain.

The American Friend is the memoire of a man who set trends with his personal style by redefining the role of diplomacy in the 21st century. Intimate friend of Obama, James Costos not only normalized gay diplomacy, but also turned the US Embassy in Madrid into the meeting place, where young entrepreneurs, top businessmen, media personalities, military personnel, politicians, heads of state, or key figures in art and culture converged.

Warm, talented, committed to his causes, and tremendously active in bringing the United States and Spain closer together, Costos knew how to go against all odds and break the rigid barriers of diplomatic protocol, energizing all aspects of his embassy with his contagious and renovating spirit.
