Se conoce como El Efecto Mariposa, un concepto filosófico que reza así "Si agita hoy el aire de Pekín, con su aleteo, una mariposa puede modificar los sistemas climáticos de Nueva York el mes que viene", o como dijo Einstein: "Hasta la más pequeña gota de rocío, caída del pétalo de una rosa al suelo, repercute en la estrella más lejana". En unos términos quizá menos poéticos, y más prácticos, significa que cualquier incidente nimio puede resultar trascendental, porque desencadena una reacción mucho mayor que lo que su entidad representa.El "efecto mariposa" intenta explicar las bases de la teoría del caos, de la que es principal teórico el belga Ilya Prigogine, Premio Nóbel de Química del año 1977, y a la que se suman y aportan ideas intelectuales de la categoría de Von Bertalanffy, el mentor de la Teoría General de los Sistemas; el meteorólogo y matemático norteamericano Edward Lorenz, con sus modelos caóticos referidos al clima; Fred Abraham y Larry Vandervert, fundadores de la Society for Chaos Theory in Psychology; y otros muchos, incluyendo las menciones de Freud.Según la teoría del caos, la vida se halla en un estado de tal inestabilidad que cualquier incidente que se salga de control puede desencadenar una catástrofe, o, al menos, que los acontecimientos se desvíen del lógico curso. El disparador puede ser una causa trivial, que en absoluto esté considerada como factor participante en el análisis razonado de lo previsible. Esto se ve con claridad en la imposibilidad de determinar el clima con meses de anticipación, ya que una ligera brisa inopinada termina convirtiéndose en un huracán por la intervención de temperaturas y presiones, y las combinaciones posibles entre ellas. Estas nimiedades; conocidas como vínculos casuales; si se someten a un proceso amplificador, pueden generar consecuencias desproporcionadas con respecto a la trascendencia del origen. Por ello, el ejemplo de la mariposa y un simple aleteo, que es lo que se considera "una magnificación al absurdo" (denominación del autor), nos explica la relevancia de las eventualidades imposibles de predecir.La relación causa-efecto suele ser estudiada como una sucesión de eventos que uno nos lleva al otro, y se llaman vínculos unidireccionales: A causa B, B causa C, etc. En este caso, el efecto se va alejando de la causa, y no influye sobre el origen. Pero hay eventos independientes, agentes libres, que pueden interferir y modificar el sentido unidireccional causa-efecto, de manera que el efecto se convierta en causa y viceversa, lo que se conoce como vínculos circulares: A causa B, B causa C, y C modifica A. Es decir, el efecto incide a su vez sobre la causa, como resultado de lo cual: ambos acontecimientos son simultáneamente, o sucesivamente, causas y efectos. Un ejemplo sería la paradoja del tiempo, regresar al pasado y poder alterar el futuro, y, por supuesto, alterar un presente que fue el punto de partida.Volviendo a la mariposa. Es ridículo, en el campo de la lógica, que un evento sin importancia aparente, y sin relación directa con el esquema de estudio, pueda ser determinante en un acontecimiento de gran trascendencia. Ello nos lleva a filosofar sobre lo conectadas que están las vidas de seres dispares, de países muy separados entre sí, o sin vínculos aparentes. El destino se encargará de unirlos, y entrelazar sus vidas, usando misteriosos métodos que solamente son patentes una vez producidos los hechos.
