Das Spiel taucht aber nicht nur in der Liebe auf, sondern wir können es überall erleben. Mal mehr, mal weniger. Beispiele hierfür sind das Glücks-, Theater-, Gemeinschafts- oder Gedankenspiel. Doch was ist Spiel überhaupt, woher kommt es und warum spielt es eine so große Rolle im menschlichen Leben? Schon immer und über Generationen hinweg war das Spiel ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Entwicklung des Menschen. Die Fähigkeit zu Spielen ist ein Kulturphänomen besonderer Art, vielleicht sogar die Wurzel der Kulturfähigkeit. Daher verdient das Spiel des Kindes unsere spezielle Aufmerksamkeit. Ein spielendes Kind ist eine Selbstverständlichkeit, denn Kind sein und Spiel gehören in unserem Verständnis unweigerlich zusammen. Im Spiel wird immer das ganze Individuum involviert. Es werden dabei alle Sinne angesprochen. Es beeinflusst uns direkt oder auch indirekt. Was wir verinnerlichen und welche Erfahrungen wir daraus ziehen, bleibt jedem selbst überlassen. Zentrales Thema in dieser Arbeit ist hauptsächlich das Spiel im Kindesalter. Es soll geklärt werden, wie das Kind in seiner Entwicklung durch das Spiel beeinflusst wird. Das kindliche Spiel ist demnach der Ausgangspunkt für sein individuelles Wachsen an Erfahrungen. Es stellt sich die Frage in welchen Zusammenhang das Spiel mit der Realität zu bringen ist, welchen Einfluss es auf das Kind hat und wie man sinnvoll spielt beziehungsweise auch spielen lernt. Für die kognitive Entwicklung eines Individuums hat das Spiel somit eine wichtige Funktion. Es werden soziale Rollen (siehe Rollenspiel) und das Verhalten im System von Regeln und Normen (siehe Regelspiel) eingeübt.
