Die Bedeutung der International Financial Reporting Standards wächst, ebenso der Anwenderkreis. Kleine und mittlere Unternehmen, soweit sie keinen Konzernabschluss aufstellen müssen und nicht am geregelten Kapitalmarkt teilnehmen, sind noch nicht direkt davon betroffen, aber die Ausrichtung der Europäischen Union auf die IFRS wird zwangsläufig dazu führen, dass sich die KMU damit auseinandersetzen müssen. Um die Einführung der IFRS-Rechnungslegung für die große Mehrheit der über 3.000.000 deutschen Unternehmen, die nicht kapitalmarktorientiert sind, ist bereits eine kontroverse Diskussion entstanden und aufgrund der vielen komplizierten Rechnungslegungsvorschriften der IFRS wird z. Zt. an Vereinfachungen für KMU im Rahmen des "Entwurfs eines vorgeschlagenen IFRS für kleine und mittelgroße Unternehmen" gearbeitet. Gesetzlich ist das Wahlrecht für die Aufstellung einer IFRS-Bilanz für nicht kapitalmarktorientierte Unternehmen in § 325 Abs. 2a HGB verankert und zusammen mit den aktuellen Entwicklungen und Diskussionen lässt es die Prognose zu, dass sich mittelfristig die IFRS-Rechnungslegung als vorherrschender Rechnungslegungsstandard durchsetzen wird. Ebenfalls wird die Einheitlichkeit der deutschen Rechnungslegung wiederhergestellt wenn alle Unternehmen nach IFRS Rechnung legen. Innerhalb der Europäischen Union wird zunehmend auf IFRS im Einzelabschluss umgestellt, teilweise zwingend, teilweise optional, aber immer mit befreiender Wirkung, d. h. der Abschluss wird nach den IFRS erstellt statt nach nationalen Standards.
