Während sich die Wirtschaft mittlerweile schrittweise von der Depression erholt, bleibt die Frage der Einkommensverteilung und der relativen Einkommensgerechtigkeit in Deutschland so aktuell wie nie. Laut Ergebnissen der Studie von Hinz und Liebig (2010) bewerten 51,6 Prozent der Befragten die heutigen sozialen Ungleichheiten in Deutschland als "zu groß" und 39,1 Prozent als "viel zu groß" (Hinz und Liebig 2010, S. 5). Dabei bewerten mindestens 64 Prozent der Auskunftspersonen ihr eigenes Erwerbseinkommen als "ungerechterweise zu niedrig" (Hinz und Liebig 2010, S. 9). Die Studienergebnisse von Liebig und Schupp aus den Jahren 2005 und 2007 zeigen, dass das subjektive Ungerechtigkeitsempfinden bezüglich des eigenen Netto-Erwerbseinkommens im Beobachtungszeitraum zugenommen hat. Während im Jahr 2005 insgesamt rund 26 Prozent aller Erwerbstätigen in Deutschland ihr Erwerbseinkommen als ungerecht bewerteten, betrug 2007 der Anteil derjenigen, die ihr Einkommen als ungerecht einstuften bereits 35 Prozent (Liebig und Schupp 2008, S. 435). Vor allem im mittleren und oberen Einkommensbereich wachsen die Ungerechtigkeitsgefühle bezüglich des eigenen Einkommens: 2005 waren 21 Prozent der Erwerbstätigen mit einem Bruttoeinkommen von 3000 Euro mit ihrem Lohn unzufrieden, 2007 ist die Zahl der unzufriedenen Beschäftigten dieser Einkommensklasse auf 36 Prozent gestiegen.
