Der Wettbewerb um qualifizierte Arbeitnehmer und der gesellschaftliche Wertwandel führen gemeinsam dazu, dass Unternehmen das Erreichen von betrieblichen und individuellen Zielen in ein neues Gleichgewicht bringen müssen. Auf Seiten der Erwerbstätigen dient die Arbeit nicht mehr allein dem Broterwerb. Der Wunsch vieler Menschen nach einer Arbeit mit der man sich identifizieren kann, die Kreativität und Selbstentfaltung zulässt steigt. Der demografische Wandel in Deutschland führt besonders seit Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts zu maßgebenden Tatsachen für Wirtschaft und Unternehmen. Immer mehr Paare verzichten auf Kinder. Frauen bekommen, auf Grund einer Unvereinbarkeit von Kind und Karriere, weniger oder keine Kinder mehr. Es ist davon auszugehen, dass über ein Drittel der Akademikerinnen in Deutschland kinderlos ist. Ein Großteil der Übrigen verzichtet für familiäre Ziele auf Karriereperspektiven, wodurch sich die Ressource der qualifizierten Arbeitskräfte weiter verkleinert. Allgemein zeichnet sich ein Wandel ab, welcher zeigt, dass Frauen und Männer, immer häufiger Familien- und Privatleben der erfolgreichen Karriere vorziehen. Auch hier müssen Unternehmen Lösungsansätze finden. In Folge der demografischen Entwicklung werden Mitarbeiter immer älter.
