Die Lesekompetenz rückt in den Fokus dieser Forschungsarbeit, da sie als universelles Kulturwerkzeug eine Schlüsselrolle für den Schulerfolg einnimmt. Unter dem Begriff "Digitale Ungleichheit" werden außerdem schon seit längerem Unterschiede in der Internetnutzung zwischen verschiedenen Schichten konstatiert. In der heutigen Zeit, in der die Internetnutzung wie selbstverständlich zu unserem Alltag gehört, stellt sich die Frage, ob die Unterschiede in der Lesekompetenz eventuell auch dadurch zu erklären sind, dass Schüler unterschiedlicher sozialer Herkunft das Internet unterschiedlich häufig zu Lesezwecken nutzen. Die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit basiert auf den Daten der PISA-Erhebung von 2012 und hat das Ziel zu untersuchen, inwieweit es sich beim Online-Lesen um einen mediierenden Faktor handelt, der zumindest einen Teil des Einflusses der sozialen Herkunft auf die Lesekompetenz erklären kann. Die theoretische Grundlage der Untersuchung bildet ein eigens entworfenes Modell, das auf der Vermengung der Kapital- und Habitus-Theorie von Bourdieu und des Matthäus-Effekts des Lesens von Stanovich beruht. Zur Messung der Online-Leseaktivität wird ein Index in Anlehnung an den "Online Reading Acitivities Index" der PISA Studie von 2009 gebildet. Die Messung der sozialen Herkunft erfolgt mit dem "Index of Economic, Social and Cultural Status". Als Indikator der Lesekompetenz wird der erste von fünf "Plausible Values" herangezogen.
