Seine Figuren sind fasziniert von der schönen neuen Welt der Bilder zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts: Sie verlieben sich in Filmstars, spielen mit dem Gedanken, Schauspieler zu werden oder sind selber Filmproduzenten wie die Hauptfigur seines letzten, unvollendeten Romans "The Love of the Last Tycoon". Das Gelingen ihres Lebens ist daher nicht zuletzt eine Frage der Ästhetik: Wenn der Titelheld in "The Great Gatsby" alles daran setzt, seine Jugendliebe Daisy aus den Armen ihres reichen Ehemannes zurückzuerobern, dann versucht er, ein Bild Wirklichkeit werden zu lassen, das er vor vielen Jahren als junger Mann erträumt hat. Nicht minder vermessen und ebenso tragisch ist der Versuch des Psychiaters Dick Diver in "Tender is the Night", für seine Frau, eine ehemalige Patientin, eine schöne Welt zu inszenieren, in der materieller Überfluss und emotionaler Reichtum einander ergänzen. Fitzgeralds Helden scheitern. Aber er beobachtet ihr Versagen nicht aus der Perspektive des Puristen, dem Ruhm und Reichtum wenig bedeuten. Im Gegenteil: Er leugnet den Reiz der schönen Oberflächen zu keinem Zeitpunkt. Selbst die Skeptiker in seinen Werken, wie der Erzähler Nick Carraway in "The Great Gatsby", sind angezogen und abgestoßen zugleich. Dies ist insofern wenig überraschend als Fitzgerald selbst den Versuchungen des neuen Zeitalters nicht widerstehen konnte. Er war einer der ersten Celebrities des 20.
