Das Vielversprechende für das Stadtmarketing ist die Idee, dass Darstellungen und das Image einer Stadt einfacher zu formen sind als die städtische Realsituation. Doch derartige Imagekonstruktionen vollziehen sich nicht ausschließlich auf stadtpolitischer Ebene und sind zudem nur begrenzt steuerbar. Die mediale Beschreibung von Orten ist untrennbar mit politischen und sozialen Konstruktionen des Images verbunden, denn insbesondere Massenmedien thematisieren bestimmte Sachverhalte, verschweigen andere und sind so direkt in die (Re-)Produktion von Stadtimages und die Aufarbeitung dieser für ein großes Publikum involviert. Der Vermittlung negativer Bilder eines Ortes kommt daher eine herausragende Bedeutung in der Positionierung dieser Städte im interkommunalen, interregionalen oder globalen Wettbewerb um begehrte Bevölkerungsgruppen und deren Ressourcen zu. Die schleswig-holsteinische Mittelstadt Neumünster wird sowohl aufgrund ihrer jüngeren ökonomischen und sozialen Transformationsprozesse als auch aufgrund ihrer Lage zwischen den Wachstumsräumen Kiel und Hamburg darauf hin untersucht, wie sich Tageszeitungen und deren digitale Ableger hinsichtlich ihrer Bezugsräume und Verortung "innerhalb" bzw. "außerhalb" des thematisierten Raums inhaltlich und formell unterscheiden. Erkenntnisse der Medienwirkungsforschung werfen bezüglich der Darstellung Neumünsters als Ereignisort verschiedener negativer Entwicklungen die Frage auf, in welcher Weise individuelle Wahrnehmungs- und Selektionspraktiken von JournalistInnen, die politische Ausrichtung der veröffentlic
