Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Das Trinkgeld ist mittlerweile fast überall als soziale Norm und Sitte in das tägliche Leben der Gesellschaft integriert. Ob Frisör, Kellner, Taxifahrer oder Zimmermädchen, alle erwarten von ihren Kunden ein kleines finanzielles Dankeschön für ihre Leistung. Mit der konkreten Ausgestaltung der Norm des Trinkgeldgebens (wie hoch also der tatsächliche Geldbetrag ist) beschäftigen sich mit dem zunehmenden Tourismus immer mehr Autoren von diversen Reiseführern, ohne jedoch ein einheitliches Bild über die derzeitige Trinkgeldsituation in den verschiedenen Staaten geben zu können. Ebenso beschäftigen sich Zahlreiche Etiquette-Bücher mit dieser Norm und geben Vorschläge, an wen man, wann und wie viel Trinkgeld geben sollte. Die Entstehung des Trinkgeldes und die Motive für dieses Verhalten zwischen „Herren" und „Dienern", also die Sitte des Trinkgeldgebens, stellt aus ökonomischer Sicht ein großes Rätsel dar. Der egoistisch denkende Mensch hat ökonomisch gesehen kein Bestreben für eine Leistung außer der vereinbarten Entlohnung einen zusätzlichen Betrag zur „Belohnung" zu geben, auch wenn er mit dieser Leistung zufrieden ist. Er muss bei einmaliger Interaktion nicht mit einer „Bestrafung" rechnen, wenn er es unterlässt ein Trinkgeld zu geben. Während die klassischen Ökonomie „versagt", versucht die Sozio-Ökonomie dieses Verhalten mit Hilfe eines „sozialen Gewissens" zu erklären. Allerdings kann auch eine Integration eines Nutzenverlustes durch unsoziales Verhalten langfristig die Existenz des Trinkgeldes nicht erklären. Da ein Trinkgeld in einer Vielzahl von Servicebereichen gegeben wird, beschränkt sich diese Studie auf eine Untersuchung der Trinkgeldgewohnheiten in Restaurants. Dies geschieht allerdings auch vor dem Hintergrund, dass über andere Bereiche keine bzw. wenige empirischen Arbeiten und Studien verfügbar sind.
