About the Book

English summary: In the 18th century, the famous art collection of the Electoral Palatinate contained one of the most important collections of ancient Roman statuary casts. The collection was founded in Dusseldorf by the Prince-Elector Johann Wilhlem II. After his death in 1716, the statues that had been displayed were stored in the castle at Mannheim until the middle of the century when the young prince Carl Theodor, an adherent of the Enlightenment, founded two art academies in Mannheim and Dusseldorf. The antique casts became part of artistic schooling and were publically displayed in the Mannheim "Academy of the Arts" in the so-called "Antiquities Hall." Because this collection was later visited by important representatives of Weimar Classicism such as Herder and Goethe, it quickly became famous. Through the political upheavals and wars associated with the French Revolution, the collection from the Antiquities Hall was increasingly depleted and in 1802 the collection was moved to the Munich Arts Academy. Then, in 1991, the collection was re-established through Wolfgang Schiering as the Gallery of Antiquities in the west wing of the Mannheim Palace. This volume contains publications from a colloquium held in 2011 in Mannheim concerning the accomplishments of the princely cast-collection derived from ancient models. Accordingly, some of the famous ancient statue groups are discussed from various aspects. A high point is represented in the sequencing of the complications group of Caunus and Byblis, influenced by Ovid's Metamorphoses. Further articles discuss the local influence of the statues from the "Antiquities Hall" and the artistic and scholarly concepts that were at work in the development of art collection in the 18th century. The conclusion offers a reproduction of Wolfgang Schiering catalog from the Gallery of Antiquities. Jahrhundert. Den Abschluss bildet der Nachdruck von Wolfgang Schierings Katalog der Antikensaalgalerie.
