Wer kennt und liebt sie nicht, Bachs h-Moll-Messe, deren Kernstuck aus dem Symbolum Nicenum, dem allen christlichen Kirchen gemeinsamen Glaubensbekenntnis, besteht? Dem Credo der h-Moll-Messe steht in der A-Dur-Fuge aus dem ersten Teil des Wohltemperierten Klaviers uberraschend ein Schwesterwerk geringer Dimension zur Seite, das in hochst konzentrierter und verschlusselter Form dessen ganzen Gehalt wiedergibt. Von dieser Fuge und dem dazugehorigen Praludium handelt das vorliegende Buch. Der Leser dringt nach und nach, mit Hilfe gezielter Ausblicke in Bachs Schaffen, in ihre Geheimnisse ein und ist am Schluss in der Lage, den ganzen lateinischen Text in Bachs Komposition wiederzuerkennen. Wie stellt Bach einzig in Musiknoten dar, dass Gott der Weltenschopfer und Jesus Christus sein Sohn ist, dass der Sohn "sogar" gekreuzigt wurde und dass dies "fur uns" und unter "Pontius Pilatus" geschah? Wie wird die Taufe gezeigt, wie, dass sie zur "Vergebung der Sunden" fuhrt? Wie, dass der Heilige Geist "mit dem Vater und dem Sohne zugleich" angebetet und verherrlicht wird, wie, dass die Kirche eine "apostolische" ist? Mit dem Verstehen der A-Dur-Fuge erhalten wir Zugang zu einem kleinen Kompendium der Ton-Sprache und der "Ubersetzertatigkeit" Bachs und auch ein wertvolles Dokument fur ein ganz personliches Glaubensbekenntnis, das ausserhalb seines Schaffens fur den kirchlichen Gottesdienst entstanden ist. Trotz ihres geringen Umfangs von nur 54 Takten, der in Verbindung mit dem dreischlagigen 9/8 Takt ubrigens genau den 162 Worten des lateinischen Credo entspricht, ist diese Fuge ein Juwel in Bachs Werk. Das Buch wendet sich vor allem an ein mitdenkendes Laienpublikum. Es ist daher mit vielen Notenbeispielen ausgestattet und so angelegt, dass die Lekture Freude bereiten soll. Nicht zuletzt deshalb ist es in viele kleine Abschnitte eingeteilt, die es erlauben sollen, Einzelaussagen herauszugreifen und selber uber sie nachzudenken.

Weitere juristische Ausbildung zugunsten der Weiterfuhrung der Firma Schwabe & Co. abgebrochen. Nachgeholtes Sprachstudium in England. 1963 Kollektivgesellschafter. Tatigkeit als Verleger an der Seite seines Vaters, seit dessen allmahlichem Ruckzug aus dem Geschaft in alleiniger Verantwortung. Mitarbeit an der Revision des schweizerischen Urheberrechts. Publikation von Buchern und Zeitschriften aus den Bereichen Philosophie, Medizin und Kunstgeschichte, an denen er gelegentlich auch als Lektor mitarbeitet. 1996 Ruckzug aus der aktiven Geschaftsfuhrung, vorbereitet durch den sorgfaltig geplanten Verkauf der Firma an die Mitarbeiter Urs Breitenstein und Ruedi Bienz. Liebe zur Musik und aktives Musizieren seit fruher Kindheit.
