Mildred Wynkoop schrijft in haar voorwoord "Dit boek gaat over liefde". Met deze woorden geeft ze gelijk weer dat ze volledig beseft wat een diepte en reikwijdte dit met zich mee brengt. Ze schetst het huidige cynisme ten aanzien van de liefde. "Liefde is een 'hol begrip' geworden, waar alle belofte en hoop op vervulling uit weg is gezogen...het is verraden". Maar deze eerlijkheid zet haar aan tot het zoeken naar diepere antwoorden dan we normaliter gewend zijn. Want Wynkoops antwoord op de uitholling van de liefde omvat een duidelijke uiteenzetting dat waarachtige liefde het kloppend hart en centrum van het christelijk geloof is. Juist door het centraal stellen van de liefde verdiept ze het besef van de 'Credibility gap'. De kloof die ontstaan is door het verschil tussen wat de kerk preekt en wat ze leeft. Wynkoop redt het spreken over de liefde voor God en mensen door deze bijzondere benadering. Wie haar boek leest, merkt dat de liefde dimensies heeft van lengte, breedte, hoogte en diepte. Liefde krijgt door haar gedachten weer inhoud, richting en kracht. Déze liefde is de liefde van Christus, en kan ook de bron zijn waar de kerk en ieder mens opnieuw uit kan putten. Wat dit boek opmerkelijk maakt is dat Wynkoop laat zien hoe de 18e eeuwse opwekkingsprediker John Wesley een goudmijn is voor het rehabiliteren van het spreken over de liefde van God. Met poëtische kracht laat ze de geschriften van Wesley op zo'n wijze spreken dat we onze eigen tijd op een andere manier gaan bekijken. Ze laat op erudiete, maar warme wijze zien wat het de moeite waard maakt om Wesleyaans te denken en handelen. Zo bewerkt ze een theologisch eerherstel der liefde, en ontsluit een bron waar we als kerk en als christen telkens naar terug kunnen keren. Wie Wynkoop leest merkt dat de woorden van Paulus diep in het hart en denken gaan resoneren: "Zo blijven dan geloof, hoop en liefde, (...) maar de meeste van deze is de liefde". (1 Cor. 13:13)
