A 1a parte do livro trata dos desafios à condução e à organização do ensino público. Daniel Cara e Ana Paula Corti desenvolvem concisos panoramas sobre as políticas educacionais no Brasil nos últimos anos e a situação do Ensino Médio, respectivamente. Os textos de Carolina Catini e Marina Avelar ampliam o debate sobre a educação como mercadoria e o avanço dos interesses privados sobre o ensino público, enquanto o de Silvio Carneiro volta-se aos reflexos dessa concepção de educação na formação dos alunos, no que ele chama "ideologia da aprendizagem". Catarina de Almeida Santos trata de um modelo educacional que, embora apresente aspectos positivos em determinados contextos, tem sido usado para ampliar a mercantilização da educação e precarizar a formação dos estudantes: o ensino a distância. Já os ensaios de José Marcelino de Rezende Pinto e Vera Jacob Chaves discutem, nessa ordem, o financiamento da educação pública e os movimentos de financeirização no ensino superior privado lucrativo.


A 2a parte da obra volta-se às atuais ameaças às práticas docentes e à educação democrática. Isabel Frade e Bianca Correa escrevem sobre as disputas na definição de políticas para a alfabetização e a primeira infância, respectivamente. Matheus Pichonelli aborda a educação domiciliar, prática polêmica defendida pelo atual governo e incluída como meta para os 100 primeiros dias de governo, enquanto Rudá Ricci faz a crítica da militarização das escolas. O debate das religiões de matrizes africanas e indígenas em sala de aula é feito por Denise Botelho, seguido por uma reflexão de Maria Carlotto sobre a guerra do governo federal contra os intelectuais brasileiros e a academia. Alexandre Linares e Eudes Baima abordam o famigerado Escola Sem Partido e a perseguição aos professores ele tenta impor nas escolas, enquanto Rogério Junqueira procura esclarecer o que seria, afinal, a "ideologia de gênero". Sérgio Haddad fecha a segunda parte com um texto sobre o educador Paulo Freire, mundialmente reconhecido, mas cada vez mais alvo do discurso reacionário no Brasil.


A 3a e última parte aponta caminhos e desafios para uma educação democrática. Rodrigo Ratier tece um elogio à raiva e à revolta nas escolas, e Pedro Pontual aborda os desafios e as propostas para a educação popular e a participação social. A busca por novos recursos educacionais e o conhecimento como bem comum são os assuntos do ensaio de Bianca Santana, seguido por uma exposição de Sonia Guajajara sobre o modelo da educação indígena como forma de enfrentamento da barbárie. Alessandro Mariano aborda o projeto educativo das escolas do MST, que há 3 décadas formam pessoas de todas as idades e fomentam inovações pedagógicas.
