About the Book

Sri Aurobindo's epic Savitri consists of three parts, having a total of number of twelve Books and forty-nine Cantos. Part One was published in September 1950, before his withdrawal in December that year; Part Two and Part Three came out together a few months later, in May 1951. We are now re-introducing this 1950-51 edition in the digital format as a single volume. The writing of Savitri by Sri Aurobindo has had a long history. It began as a tale based on the Mahabharata narrative. The author's earlier version describes it as A Tale and a Vision. Later, in the early 1930s, it became A Legend and a Symbol. This was when the "symbolic myth of the Vedic cycle" contained in it began emerging more and more prominently. "Savitri is represented in the poem," says the Yogi-Poet, "as an incarnation of the Divine Mother. This incarnation is supposed to have taken place in the far past times when the whole thing had to be opened, so as to 'hew the ways of Immortality'." There were a number of revisions whilst the composition of the poem proceeded through long years. The poem kept on growing and expanding almost for two decades as it went through several stages of repeated drafting. Even as late as July 1948, considerable amount of new material had to be added in Part Two and Part Three. Eventually, it became an epic of about 24,000 lines. The 'manuscripts' exist in thousands of pages, in notebooks, chit-pads and loose sheets of paper, and finally in revisions on type-sheets and the proofs. This situation of multiple drafting, for certain passages 25-30, even 50 drafts, led to different editions of Savitri during the last sixty years. There are, for instance, some 170 differences between the 1950-51 and the 1954 editions. But, unfortunately, fuller textual details pertaining to the changes in each and every entry are not available anywhere, changes in the printed text with respect to what is there in the 'manuscripts'. And how was the Savitri-work completed? In mid-November 1950 Sri Aurobindo added three passages by dictation in The Book of Fate, Book Six Canto Two. In one of them we have a significant line about the triumph of immortal knowledge over death, by passing through it. It looks that Sri Aurobindo had already decided to withdraw, and it is that which is indicated here very provocatively. It discloses the occult truth behind the decision. Given such a nature of the epic, belonging to the luminous occult-yogic-spiritual, it is important to be extremely conscientious in editing Savitri, to be perceptive to its rich super-human dimensions, those which come from a very high plane of inspiration and knowledge. In fact on our part there should not be any editing at all. Unless there comes to us "absolute understanding," unless we are guided by that "very beautiful light" of Savitri itself, we should not attempt anything of the sort. We should go by the Original Edition that more or less came out during the lifetime of the Yogi-Poet himself. With it there can be the directness of contact with him, and of course for the lovers of Savitri there is a certain sanctity also associated with it.
