About the Book

Edinburgh in the Shadows - stories the tourist guides never reveal...Want to know the Edinburgh the tourist guides won't tell you about? Beattie and Scratchmann tell it like it really is in this fact-packed book from their popular spoken word show about the city's sinister side with stories, tales and poems of drugs and murder, witchcraft and fetishes, executions and hauntings, cover ups and botch jobs that reveal the truth behind Edinburgh's lesser-known miscreants, unfortunates and flawed geniuses.'thoroughly dark and entertaining''kept the audience amused, aghast and attentive''darkly fascinating historical laughs and thrills''grimly amusing'First performed in June 2015, Edinburgh in the Shadows has entertained and amused audiences at the Celtic Mystery Festival, the Grassmarket Festival, the Merchant City Comedy Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It's also sold out at the National Library of Scotland, and toured libraries, cafes, pubs and clubs throughout Edinburgh. Back on the road for 2016, the show will be performed at the Cowgatehead venue during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with a warm up tour of Edinburgh's nest reading establishments.
About the Author: Alec Beattie is a writer, promoter and performer. He's been involved in the Edinburgh spoken word scene for years and currently runs and co-hosts Blind Poetics. As well as being an Edinburgh Fringe regular he's performed his poetry and short stories throughout Scotland. His third novel is due for publication in September 2016, and he's also published a collection of short stories, details of which can be found at www.alecbeattie.org. He lives in Edinburgh with his partner and two cats. Max Scratchmann is one half of the Poetry Circus as well as being an illustrator, writer and performer, equally well known for his dark art and black comedy. He is a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe and was one of the four Inky Fingers' Poets on a Bus at the Edinburgh History Festival. He lives in Edinburgh in a depressingly cat-free household. Gracia Navas is a self-taught artist and illustrator and works as a professional freelance translator. She did the illustrations for several stories published in the Duality books series between 2010 and 2013. In 2014, one of her drawings was selected for the Royal Scottish Academy Open Exhibition. When she is not working or drawing, she loves reading, gardening and watching her cats. She lives in Edinburgh with her partner.
