Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: In der sich heute immer weiter herauskristallisierenden Informationsgesellschaft müssen alte Marketingstrategien durch neue ersetzt werden. Dabei scheint das Customer Relationship Management (CRM) zu einem immer gebräuchlicheren Schlagwort für die Idee zu werden, den einzelnen Kunden mehr Bedeutung zuzumessen, als dies vormals der Fall war. Das Internet als das erfolgreichste neue Kommunikationsmedium der neunziger Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts und des gerade begonnenen neuen Jahrtausends scheint dabei eine wesentliche Rolle zu spielen. Zum einen bestimmt es die neuen Rahmenbedingungen für den Markt und seine Mechanismen mit, indem es beispielsweise regionale Schranken auflöst und zu einer Liberalisierung der Information führt. Zum anderen stellt es auch gleichzeitig ein mächtiges Instrument dar, neue Formen des Marketings zu entwickeln und zu verwirklichen. Der Markt für Customer Relationship Management-Lösungen in Japan soll bis zum Jahr 2006 ein Volumen von fast 7 Milliarden US-Dollar erreichen. Das würde einem jährlichen Wachstum von 18 Prozent in diesem Segment entsprechen. Allein für den Teilbereich der IT Servicedienstleistungen für das CRM wird ein jährliches Wachstum von 19 Prozent erwartet. Japan hat den Ruf, ein Land der neuesten Technologie zu sein. Besonders in der Konsumer- und Unterhaltungsindustrie sieht es so aus, dass japanische Unternehmen wie Sony weltweit den Ton angeben. Darüber hinaus scheint auch der Ausspruch „Der Kunde ist König." in Japan eine wirkliche Bedeutung zu haben. Dieser Arbeit liegt nun die Frage zugrunde, inwiefern in Japan Konzepte des CRM auch durch den Einsatz von Informationstechnologie und im Speziellen den Möglichkeiten des Internets verwirklicht werden. Da Japan allerdings zu Beginn der Entfaltung der ökonomischen Nutzung des Internets in seiner eigenen Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet hinter den USA und anderen Industriestaaten zurücklag, stellt sich die Frage, ob sich dies auch bis heute ne
