Claude Durix a etudie la calligraphie au Japon, avec un vieux maitre de la calligraphie classique A l'origine, il avait commence cette etude en pensant que ce serait un excellent entrainement pour la chirurgie de l' oeil qu'il exercait au Maroc depuis 1950. C' etait tout a fait vrai. Mais tres vite il a abandonne ces motivations pratiques pour se laisser prendre simplement par la beaute profonde de l'art, par sa grande valeur esthetique, la purete des formes, le ceremonial et la discipline interieure qu'il exigeait. Depuis ce premier moment, il n'a jamais cesse de pratiquer tous les jours la calligraphie pour elle-meme, sans recherche d'un quelconque interet pratique. Li Yangbing, calligraphe celebre du VIIe siecle, a ecrit un livre qui s'intitule Les huit lois du caractere eternite ou il analyse dans tous ses details le caractere chinois qui signifie eternite, ou l'on retrouve en effet, outre son sens symbolique general, tous les elements de toute la calligraphie. C' est, dit-il, un exemple remarquable d'equilibre dans tous les elements de sa composition, dans leurs directions, dans leurs expansions, leurs contractions... Sa belle simplicite est le resultat de nombreux et delicats ajustements... Ce livre retrace le grand miracle qui a conduit les hommes, depuis la prehistoire, a decouvrir et a perfectionner d'abord le langage, puis l'ecriture, pour en faire un instrument de plus en plus perfectionne de communication, et finalement une forme d'art tres epuree qu'il faut savoir etudier avec patience et regarder avec les yeux de l'esprit, dans le temps des hommes et dans l'eternite.
