Doña Emilia, a sus 87 años, rememora una vida marcada por el dolor y el amor familiar. Su relato revela las complejas relaciones y secretos que moldearon su existencia. La historia inicia con su hermano Pedro, un hombre generoso y enamoradizo que, pese a tener su propio hogar, inicia una relación con Cris, con quien tiene dos hijos. Sin embargo, las circunstancias llevan a que estos niños sean separados desde muy pequeños, siendo criados en distintos lugares por diferentes familias.
Sonia y Luis, que habían perdido a su primer hijo, encuentran en Chiquilín una fuente de consuelo, tratándolo como si fuera su propio hijo. Sin embargo, la muerte de Luis debido a una enfermedad terminal sume al niño en una profunda tristeza, lo que lo lleva a una vida de rebeldía y a distanciarse de su madre, Cris.
Mientras tanto, Cielo, es acogida por Doña Emilia en 1.978 en Bogotá. Al ver que la niña estaba siendo descuidada, toma la decisión de criarla como una hija propia. Ella crece en el pueblo bajo su cuidado, enfrentando rumores y dificultades, quien a medida que crece se destaca por su independencia y éxito académico, convirtiéndose en una joven fuerte y decidida.
Los hermanos, que fueron separados desde bebés, lograron que sus vidas se entrelazaran de manera esporádica durante su infancia, sin ser conscientes de su vínculo familiar. Fue solo cuando alcanzaron la adultez que, al reencontrarse, comenzaron a compartir aspectos de sus vidas que hasta entonces desconocían. Este redescubrimiento mutuo los llevó a embarcarse en una búsqueda de su identidad y de una realidad que hasta ese momento les había sido oculta.
Chiquilín fue quien obtuvo una información crucial que compartió con su hermana: descubrió quién era su verdadera madre y dónde podían encontrarla. Sería ella quien podría aclarar todas sus dudas sobre el abandono y explicar los motivos que la llevaron a dejarlos y perder todo contacto con ellos.
Estos dos hermanos, decididos a conocer toda la verdad, acordaron que, una vez Chiquilín regresara de un viaje de trabajo fuera de la ciudad, donde estaría varios días, se encontrarían para emprender juntos la tan esperada visita. Ambos expresaron el gran temor de enfrentarse a un pasado lleno de incógnitas, conscientes de que esa sería la única manera de resolver las muchas incertidumbres que los atormentaban.
Los días pasaron sin que Chiquilín se reportara, lo que generó una profunda angustia entre sus familiares y amigos. El esperado encuentro que tanto ansiaban quedó suspendido, diluido por los caprichos del destino, dejando inconclusa la búsqueda de una verdad que, desde la infancia de estos hermanos, había causado ansiedad y soledad en ambos. Esa luz de esperanza que había surgido se apagó abruptamente cuando encontraron a Chiquilín muerto en un hotel. Había terminado con su vida al suicidarse con cianuro.
