About the Book

Elaine Schwartz, founder of econlife, masterfully teaches core economic concepts through everyday life and U.S. history in her new book, Econ 101 1/2 The Foundation. The first in a series, the book explores the pioneering thinkers and events that have shaped the economic history of the United States. Combining historic reference points, people, and a circular flow model, it conveys the power of the market. The trade-offs that drive the players in the circular flow model are basic to Schwartz's economic explanations. The book also returns consistently to a list of Current Connections at the end of each chapter. Linked to articles from Elaine's daily blog on econlife.com, these Connections frame the timeless economic concepts explained in the book within the context of modern-day events. Throughout, readers are treated to marvelous illustrations by American cartoonist, Ted Goff.
About the Author: Elaine Schwartz has spent her career sharing the interesting side of economics. At the Kent Place School in Summit, NJ, she has been honored through an Endowed Chair in Economics and the History Department chairmanship. At the same time, she developed curricula and wrote several books including Understanding Our Economy (originally published by Addison Wesley as Economics Our American Economy) and Econ 101 1/2 (Avon Books/Harper Collins). Elaine has also written in the Encyclopedia of New Jersey (Rutgers University Press) and was a featured teacher in the Annenberg/CPB video project "The Economics Classroom." Beyond the classroom, she has presented Econ 101 1/2 talks and led workshops for the Foundation for Teaching Economics, the National Council on Economic Education and the Concord Coalition. An avid writer and blogger, Elaine is the author of the econlife.com daily blog which seeks to connect economics with everyday life.
