Die Musik war diesem Dichter alles andere als gleichgultig, und er tritt uns in seinen Schriften als ihr engagierter Anwalt entgegen: mit grosser Sachkenntnis und einer Sprache voller Witz und Innigkeit. Nicht nur als Musikkritiker hatte Spitteler Gelegenheit, sich zu allen moglichen Aspekten zu aussern, auch in seinem dichterischen Werk taucht dann und wann die Musik auf, und schliesslich erfahren wir in den autobiographischen Schriften viel uber den wachen, emotionalen und ergriffenen Horer Spitteler - und daruberhinaus uber den genialen Vermittler, der fur musikalische Zusammenhange weitab vom Fachjargon treffende Bilder findet und seine Leserinnen und Leser in Bann schlagt. Aus der Fundgrube von Spittelers Schaffen hat Andreas Wernli die schonsten und wichtigsten Beitrage zusammengestellt.
About the Author: Carl Spitteler wurde 1845 in Liestal (Kanton Basel-Landschaft) geboren. Nach dem Studium der Geschichte bei Jacob Burckhardt und der evangelischen Theologie wirkte er als Privatlehrer zuerst in Russland und Finnland, dann in der Schweiz. Nach verschiedenen journalistischen Tatigkeiten (u.a. bei Der Bund und Neue Zurcher Zeitung) lebte er seit 1892 als freier Schriftsteller in Luzern, wo er 1924 hochgeehrt starb. Neben seinem schriftstellerischen Wirken nahm Spitteler auch mit kunst- und kulturkritischer Publizistik zur Zeitgeschichte Stellung. Seine radikale Neutralitatsrede Unser Schweizer Standpunkt erregte 1914 grosses Aufsehen. 1919 wurde Spitteler fur sein Hauptwerk Olympischer Fruhling mit dem Literaturnobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Andreas Wernli, Dr. phil., hat Musiktheorie und Musikwissenschaft in Zurich studiert, war dort Dozent an Universitat, Konservatorium und Musikhochschule und leitete wahrend mehrerer Jahre die Musikabteilung von Schweizer Radio DRS. Seit den neunziger Jahren ist er als freischaffender Musikwissenschaftler und Kulturmanager in Basel tatig.
