Gerade einmal 5% der existierenden elektronischen Marktplätze werden bis 2005 noch aktiv sein, so spekulieren die Analysten. Doch sollte man nicht vergessen, dass trotz aller ernüchternden Spekulationen die Umsätze der e-Marktplätze steigen und durchaus Potenzial in ihnen steckt. Um dieses Potenzial für die eigene Unternehmung ausnutzen zu können, bedarf es, sich mit den vorhandenen und kommenden Systemen näher auseinander zu setzen. Es gilt herauszufinden, welche Systeme potenziell Überlebenschancen haben und welche nicht. Ein Einstieg in das e-Business stellt ein recht hohes finanzielles Risiko dar. Damit dieses Risiko kalkulierbar bleibt und sich die Implementierung einer "Standartschnittstelle" am Ende nicht als Fehlinvestition erweist, ist es unabdingbar, die existierenden Systeme anhand von bestimmten Kriterien zu durchleuchten. Spezialisten geben dazu Hilfestellungen, welche Systeme aus welchen Gründen zukunftsträchtig sind und welche weniger. Nachdem das zweite Kapital Einblicke darüber gibt, was e-Business ist und was es umfasst, beschäftigt sich das dritte Kapitel mit den unterschiedlichen Marktplatzkategorien. Elektronische Marktplätze werden hier nach der Struktur ihrer Teilnehmer, nach der Betreiberstruktur und nach der Ausrichtung unterschieden. Den Schwerpunkt der Arbeit bildet das vierte Kapitel. Hier wird charakterisiert, welche Dienste ein elektronischer Marktplatz anbieten kann. Und was davon auch bei Elemica zum Produktportfolio gehört.
