Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Kunst - Malerei, Note: 1,3, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im Zuge dieser Arbeit werden die große Ebstorfer Weltkarte und die kleine Psalterkarte von London samt ihrer Rückseite, die eine weitere Karte ohne bildlichen, aber mit reinem textlichem Inhalt enthält, miteinander verglichen. Ein großes Augenmerk wird dabei auf das Bild-Text-Verhältnis der jeweiligen Karten gelegt, um so zu erschließen, wie sich die mittelalterlichen Weltkarten lesen und verstehen lassen, als Gattung, die zwischen Bild und Buch zu begreifen sein scheint. Nach einem einführenden Überblick über mittelalterliche Karten werden zunächst die beiden Karten als Einzelnes betrachtet und ihre Herkunft, Entstehung und äußere Form geklärt. Danach werden die beiden Karten nach Form, Inhalten und Darstellung gesondert betrachtet und gegenübergestellt. Stets berücksichtigt werden dabei Erscheinung und Funktion des vorhandenen Textes. "Mappa heißt Abbild, daher Mappe mundi so viel wie: Abbild der Welt" - mit diesen Worten leitet die sogenannte Ebstorfer Weltkarte in einer ihrer rahmenden Legende den Betrachter an, sich ihrem Werk zu nähern. Jene Weltkarte hat, wie viele vergleichbare Karten des Mittelalters, ein besonderes Bild auf Pergament gebannt. Anders als heutige Weltkarten, vereinen die Mappae Mundi verschiedene Aspekte jenseits geographischer Eigenschaften. Entsprechend gelten sie als spannende Zeugnisse mittelalterlicher Wahrnehmung und mittelalterlichen Wissens. Besonderes Interesse gilt in der kunstgeschichtlichen Betrachtung den großformatigen Weltkarten, wie die der Arbeit zugrundeliegende Ebstorfer Weltkarte oder die Hereford Map. Ihre schiere Größe ermöglicht ihnen detailreiche und faszinierende Karten zu präsentieren. Aber auch kleinere Karten, die in weitaus größerer Zahl erhalten sind, halten spannende Beobachtungen parat.
