About the Book

Offering two exceptional works by Ecuadorian author Pablo Palacio, this compilation includes the anti-romance novel Deborah and A Man Kicked to Death, a novella about the pitiful existence of a man on the margins of society. The former presents the main character, Lieutenant, as an allegorical figure desperately searching for love but only finding himself in ridiculous romantic situations involving Deborah, a woman who is two women at once. Love is nothing more than a wish and a search, a yearning for something impossible in this novel that deals with the process of its own construction, without a clearly defined plot. The latter tells of a poor foreigner who one night searches for a man to fulfill his sexual desires. After being rejected again and again on the street, he ends up being attacked, kicked in the stomach, and left for dead.
