El presente es un relato, relacionado con la vida de Agapito, un niño nacido en el modesto hogar formado por Filemón Villalba y Patricia Vargas, el primero un funcionario público de bajo rango y ella una dama emprendedora, dedicada al cuidado de sus hijos y alternando esta actividad con diferentes acciones productivas, que le permiten ayudar en gran parte con el sustento de la familia. El entusiasmo y los proyectos visualizados por la familia de Agapito, se vieron truncados, con la muerte de Patricia Vargas, pilar fundamental del hogar que conformaba con Filemón Villalba, quien debió enfrentar su vida cuidando de sus ocho hijos menores.Ante esa nueva realidad, Agapito y sus hermanos mayores, debieron asumir el rol de trabajadores y en su pubertad experimentar acontecimientos un tanto prematuros para su edad. Fueron trabajos propios de adultos, los cuales tuvo que desarrollar, para obtener recursos y apoyar en el sostenimiento de su hogar.Agapito, debió asumir el reconocimiento de sus errores, así como la aplicación de los principios fundamentales de todo ser humano, dado el origen católico y conservador de su familia Es un relato, que lleva al lector, a conocer una faceta real, sobre cómo se desarrolla la vida de algunos grupos familiares originarios de los pueblos en vías del desarrollo y las vicisitudes que deben sobrellevar, para lograr sus objetivos. Esta obra es la primera de una serie de ocho libros, en los cuales se relatan, hechos y acontecimientos de diferente índole, vividos por Agapito Villalba, durante el mas de sesenta años existencia. En este primer volumen, podremos ver como era la vida en el hogar de los Villalba Vargas, en especial el caso de Agapito, un niño vivaz, inquieto, escurridizo, que llegó a perderse en un pequeño poblado y que su aparición fue motivo de jolgorio de toda la comunidad. Así mismo, la agradable aventura vivida en el campo, cuando su Madre, Doña Patricia Vargas, lo llevó en compañía de su hermano Josué, a recoger café, cortar caña de azúcar y procesarla para convertirla en panela. Aprendió que, en el campo, las personas se levantan a las cuatro de la mañana y a las cinco ya están en sus actividades agrícolas y que después de un largo día de trabajo, se deleitan, con cuentos del tío José Loza o con interpretaciones musicales de Joselito Pulido. Supo que es dormir sobre un cuero seco de vaca, sentir el frio de la noche y saber cómo se obtiene la leche de vaca. También logró vivir las travesuras de monaguillo, aquellos ayudantes en la misa, que no obstante la seriedad de la celebración, ponen en ejecución sus diabluras, para vivir con ellas momentos agradables y disfrutar de su infancia. Aprendieron como se fabrican las hostias y lo bueno que saben con el vino de consagrar. La serie se ha titulado "DURO DE VIVIR", con la cual se pretende llevar a la conciencia de los lectores, que no todo es fácil en esta vida, no todo llega en bandeja de plata y que el ser humano, está expuesto a diferentes situaciones en las cuales debe vislumbrar el camino a seguir, bien sea para hundirse en el lodo o para llegar a la cima del éxito. En el caso de Agapito Villalba, a pesar de haberse visto enfrentado a diferentes situaciones, logró tomar el camino correcto de la historia y en algunos casos rectificar el rumbo. Haciendo analogía al título de la obra del nobel García Márquez, guardando las proporciones y el respeto por el honorable, "ha podido vivir para contarlo".
