Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 2,3, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Institut für Geschichtswisenschaften), Veranstaltung: Diokletian, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diokletian war der letzte antike Herrscher, der eine Christenverfolgung einleitete, sie wurde zu einer der schwersten im Römischen Reich. Er ging dabei geplant und zielgerichtet gegen die Christen vor. Seine Beweggründe für diese Verfolgung sind ungeklärt. Häufig wird eine Einreihung in die allgemeine Reformtätigkeit vermutet oder die eigene Religiosität Diokletians. Überliefert wurde die Verfolgung vor allem durch die Werke der beiden christlichen Autoren Lactanz, der "Von den Todesarten der Verfolger" schrieb, und Euseb, der eine der ersten Kirchengeschichten verfasste. In meiner Arbeit werde ich mich mit der Durchführung der Verfolgung beschäftigen. Ich möchte einen Überblick über die eingeleiteten Maßnahmen geben, sowie über deren Gründe und Effektivität. Ganz kurz werde ich am Anfang versuchen den Anlass zu beschreiben. Im Aufbau der Arbeit werde ich chronologisch vorgehen, in der Rheinfolge der Edikte, wobei die Schriften von Lactanz und Euseb die Grundlage für die weiteren Ausführungen bilden sollen. In den beiden letzten Punkten wende ich mich der Intensität und der Vorgehensweise bei der Verfolgung zu. Zeitlich werde ich mich im Rahmen der Amtszeit Diokletians und Maximians bewegen, meine Arbeit wird also nur den Zeitraum vom Beginn der Verfolgung im Februar 303 bis zum Rücktritt der beiden Kaiser im Jahr 305 behandeln, obwohl die Verfolgung auch nach 305 in geringerem Umfang fortgesetzt wurde und erst 311 mit dem Toleranzedikt von Galerius endete. Ich werde versuchen zu klären, ob von Anfang an beabsichtigt war, vier Edikte zu erlassen und die Maßnahmen schon in der Reihenfolge geplant waren oder ob die weiterführenden Edikte vielmehr Reaktionen auf das erste und aufeinander waren, weil sie sich nicht als wirkungsvoll genu
