Inés, una estudiante universitaria inglesa, se enamora del heredero de una conocida empresa vinícola navarra durante un curso de verano en Francia. A partir de ese momento, se ve sumida en una espiral de violencia doméstica. Esta biografía es una carta que el hijo mayor de Inés escribe a sus propios hijos detallando la dinámica de abuso familiar en la que se vio involucrado durante su niñez y adolescencia. Los hijos del autor se convierten en personajes de esta historia al proporcionarle la oportunidad de ser el padre que él mismo no tuvo y de reivindicar su propia juventud: "No vais a tener una infancia robada, una infancia de abusos, tristeza, hambre y frío". Sin embargo, cuarenta años después, sigue habiendo muchas preguntas sin respuesta. Entre ellas: por qué ocurrió el abuso, por qué se permitió que continuara durante años, y por qué las víctimas y los testigos callaron.

El esfuerzo de recordar esos años de caos y abuso sumerge al autor en una especie de terrorífico psicoanálisis a través del cual la depresión y las psicopatías son revisitadas. Los personajes del libro poseen al escritor hasta el punto de provocarle episodios psicóticos como si la carta verdaderamente estuviera maldita.

Al mismo tiempo, el autor descubre, en esta exploración de su pasado, que su padre no fue el causante de todo su sufrimiento, sino que existe todo un entramado de abuso sociocultural; un abuso que es descrito como un proceso de embrutecimiento al que todos estamos sometidos y que nos deja vulnerables a todo tipo de vejaciones.

Como resultado de este proceso de embrutecimiento, el personaje principal desarrolla una conciencia parricida, suicida y antisocial en la adolescencia, lo que le llevará al fracaso escolar, la drogodependencia, la delincuencia y la militancia en la movida de los años ochenta.

Sin embargo, como el autor comparte con sus hijos, "a pesar del abuso, mi infancia estuvo llena de magia, amor, personajes increíbles, y libertad. Es una historia positiva, os lo aseguro; mi mejor historia. No quiero que os la perdáis." En efecto, este libro hace homenaje a todas esas personas que, quizá sin darse cuenta, eran ángeles de la guarda para una familia afectada por la violencia doméstica.

Una de las mayores incógnitas de esta historia es el sufrimiento inmerecido. En la búsqueda de respuestas al sufrimiento de los niños, va a surgir un personaje nuevo, Jesucristo, que se convertirá paulatinamente en el personaje principal de la historia, porque solo Cristo explica el dolor y solo Cristo da sentido y fundamento a la vida.

Dulce Compañía está escrito desde la perspectiva del perdón y describe al abusador como una víctima más. Por eso es un relato positivo que busca respuestas a una problemática que, normalmente, se simplifica demasiado. Esta biografía nos sumerge en el confuso mundo de la familia desestructurada, del maltrato sufrido a manos de seres queridos, y del desamparo y la depresión infantil. Además, nos anima a compartir nuestras experiencias de abuso y a entablar un diálogo honesto y conciliador.
