In questo documento vengono discusse due strategie per gestire i picchi e le fluttuazioni glicemiche postprandiali. Nello studio 1, sette soggetti diabetici T1 (di età compresa tra 18-50 anni, BMI 18-29 kg/m2), su iniezioni di insulina multiple al giorno, sono stati studiati per confrontare il conteggio dei carboidrati convenzionali (CC) con il carico glicemico calcolato per la loro utilità nella stima della dose di insulina per un migliore controllo glicemico. I primi 6 giorni di CC sono stati seguiti da un secondo 6 giorni di consigli basati sul GL con 7 giorni di durata. I dati indicano che la dose di insulina calcolata su base GL porta ad una fluttuazione significativamente minore dei livelli di glucosio nel sangue nei soggetti T1DM. Nello studio 2, otto soggetti sani (età 18-25 anni, IMC 18-25 kg/m2) sono stati studiati come il consumo di 2 bevande standard di 3 bevande alcoliche (birra, vino e gin), 1 ora prima di un pasto, influisce sulle risposte glicemiche e insulaenimiche. I dati suggeriscono che il consumo di bevande alcoliche prima dei pasti riduce significativamente l'iperglicemia (con birra e vino che hanno un effetto maggiore del gin) ma non l'insulinemia.
