Incapables de contrôler les mécanismes économiques, les fonctionnaires impériaux allaient faire de Shanghai le fer de lance de ces zones d'activité autonomes. Car Shanghai était une ville frontière, fruit du conflit entre la Chine impériale et les puissances étrangères. Et comme elle se trouvait aux antipodes de ces puissances, on y vit débarquer des aventuriers en quête de fortune où ils donnèrent libre cours à leurs talents criminels en s'associant à des chinois qui allaient y prospérer et forger le destin de cette ville particulière.Avec les bouleversements politiques, les sociétés secrètes chinoises se transformèrent en organisations criminelles qui allaient accaparer les nombreux trafics. La plus prestigieuse d'entre elles portera le nom de Bande Verte. Et le plus prestigieux des chefs de la Bande Verte s'appellera Du Yuesheng, Du les Grandes Oreilles pour ses détracteurs.Du Yuesheng, orphelin ayant grandi dans le bidonville de Pudong, dans les faubourgs de Shanghai entra dans la Bande Verte à seize ans et son goût de l'aventure fit de lui l'un des chefs les plus puissants. Au prix du sang de ses adversaires. Il opéra dans le trafic d'opium dans la Concession française de Shanghai où il prospéra, tenant ce commerce d'une main de fer grâce aux nombreux membres de la Bande Verte et surtout à son pouvoir de conviction. Il trouva les arguments pécuniaires pour s'associer aux tenants de l'administration française.Les événements politiques qui bouleversèrent la Chine impériale à cette époque lui permirent de nouer des contacts avec l'homme fort du Parti nationaliste, le Guomindang, le général Tchang-Kaï-chek. Seule l'intervention japonaise mit un frein à son ascension, l'empêchant de se faire élire comme maire de Shanghai. Son éloignement du terrain signa le début de sa descente aux enfers.Du Yuesheng parvint malgré tout à maintenir sa puissance et à se faire élire maire de Shanghai en 1947 avec le concours du Guomindang. Mais cette gloire ne dura qu'une journée car il dut, aussitôt, se retirer de la vie politique. Il se consacra alors à ses affaires et devint l'homme le plus riche de la ville, le Seigneur de Shanghai.La prise du pouvoir par les communistes le força à quitter définitivement la ville et à se réfugier à Hong-Kong où il continua ses activités.Du Yuesheng mourut le 19 août 1951. Ne pouvant être enterré à Hong-Kong, son corps fut transféré à Taïwan où il fut enterré dans un mausolée à son image.
