Du se ocupó del tráfico de opio en la concesión francesa de Shanghái, donde prosperó, sosteniendo este comercio con mano de hierro gracias a los numerosos miembros de la Banda Verde y sobre todo su poder de convicción. Su distancia del terreno firmo el comienzo de su bajada al infierno.Du Yuesheng logro sin embargo mantener su poder y conseguir a ser elegido como alcalde de Shanghái en 1947 con el apoyo del Kuomintang. Pero esta gloria duró sólo un día porque tuvo, inmediatamente, retirarse de la vida política. Entonces, se dedicó a sus negocios y se convirtió en el hombre el más rico de la ciudad, el Señor de Shanghái.La toma del poder por los comunistas le obligo a abandonar la ciudad y a refugiarse en Hong Kong, donde continuó sus actividades.Du Yuesheng murió el 19 de agosto de 1951. Como no pudo ser enterrado en Hong Kong, su cuerpo fue trasladado a Taiwán donde fue enterrado en un mausoleo a su imagen.
